question about cloning
    #6668110 - 03/14/07 09:43 AM (17 years, 10 months ago)

I don't understand it. Since cloning isn't isolating a strain, the how does it work. If you clone a mushroom lets say using liquid culture, are you getting a single strain of mushroom or is the mycellium in the lc still a bunch of different strains as if you used multispore innocultion?

I can see how this would be confusing. Cloning is not really "isolating" because there's nothing to isolate away from. When you clone, the resulting mycelium will have the same genetics as the parent fruit. It will be comprised of one single "sub-strain". Isolation is done on agar, where you are isolating away contaminates or less desirable "sub-strains". I hope this helps, probably just made it more confusing.

In addition, when multispore inoculation is used, more than one strain often 'collaborate' to produce fruits, so cloning isn't always a guarantee of a single strain.

I don't understand RR. So a single fruit can contain genetics from more than one "parent" strain, and each's attributes could present themselves in future grows from a single clone? Could you please explain?

Paul does a much better job of explaining it in GGMM than I can, but yes, with multispore inoculation it sometimes happens. I've cloned tissue from fruits before and observed multiple sectors branch out. I don't mean different mycelium types, but actual sectors of non-compatible strains. It's fairly rare because most strains combine via anastomosis prior to flushing, but it does happen sometimes, and it's much more common when cloning wild fruits.

I see, thank you. I never knew that was possible. I hope this helps the original poster. +5 for you Roger.

Or since he has answered this, and 100s have asked this already- you could have found your answers via the search engine.

reposting info never hurts in forums this size, esp. since there are people that love helping out.  I don't know how many times I've learned something that I've wondered about by just reading what others have to say in various posts that I was wasn't even looking for... like this thread for example... I didn't know that one fruitbody could be from two parent strains... I don't think I would ever have looked for that info but there it is.
