Pleurotus Ostreatus on Brassica Napus straw
    #5047045 - 12/11/05 04:04 AM (18 years, 2 months ago)

Hi,

We are growing a winter oyster shroom greenhouse crop on bagged wheat straw. Recently we have gained acces to a supply of organic oilseed rape straw and plan to use it in the next run.

I could not find info via google and literature, so I was wondering if there is someone on this board with experience/ideas regarding this substrate (or mixture).

Thanks,

High,

Been 414 days... thought I should update on the progress

We did two runs of garbage bag grows in the greenhouse; with wheatstraw and with Brassica straw.
It seemed like it was much easier to get the right moisture content in the Brassica substrate. The yield of the Brassica bags prooved to be much higher then the wheatstraw bags; yielding 10-15% of initial substrate weight. So 1 - 1,5 kg clean oysters per bag

Hope this is of any use..

nice, they look quite big, how does that work? is it the strain or the way it's been grown. Don't seem to get any bigger than about three inches when I grow from a autoclavable bag.

The clusters on Brassica straw were much bigger, compared with plain straw culture. In Brassica each garbage bag gave on average one kilo for the first flush, straw maybe 500 gram. We did make a basic report on this growout, ill remove some names and post it here soon.
Pity we did not keep a better log and give the project a proper experimental design...the Brassica straw rocked!
Dont remember what strain it was, spawn was multiplied by ourselfs but the initial spawn batch came from Peter Oei.

Cheers,
