Pan casing mix?

hey there, I'm about to start my first work on pan copes and was wondering if medium grade verm is going to be ok to case with straight. I've had others tell me they didn't have luck with straight verm on pans but I just wanted to get a few more thoughts on the subject. Has anyone had luck with just a verm casing on pans or can show me a thread with this subject? If they need something active in the casing I have no problem adding something like coir or peat but would like to know why they need an active casing layer. thanks in advance.

with pans the main thing you want to concentrate on is a very very very thin casing layer. In fact, it should be so thin that it should just be able to cover the surface of the substrate and that's it. Straight verm tends to get compacted pretty easily, IMO it's best to use a little peat in there to keep it fluffy.
Just keep in mind "thin to win!"

cool. thanks i'll probably (and should) do a few different ones and few different times to get a nice grip on how they like their pinning enviro. I'm really wanting to not have to use anything active in the end; if thats even possible. was thinking fine verm with some perlite as one test, medium grade alone. fine with coir. medium with coir. maybe a cactus soil mix. thanks for the headsup.

Yup
I use an 1/8" casing layer . It's also neccessary to keep the substrate layer thin . I use an inch minimum and a 1 1/2" maximum depth .
Good Luck
