adjusting ph of a bulk tub
    #6663529 -

Should I be adjusting the ph of the substrate I'm spawning to (in this case, Scotts 3-in-1 compost), or just the casing layer?

I'm planning to use oyster shell flour to adjust the ph. I've heard this maintains ph better in the long run than lime. If anyone has any suggestions I'd like to hear them.

Thanks,
SM

Depends, is it acidic and needs to be adjusted? Normally, common bulk substrate material doesn't need to be ph balanced. Just get some litmus strips or a ph meter and adjust accordingly.

Usually the bulk substrate only needs to be pH adjusted when adding high nitrogen or acidic additives such as blood meal, spent coffee grounds, etc.

I am not familiar with Scott's 3-in-1 compost, but from what I have heard...store bought compost isn't what you're looking for. This Scott's stuff may be different from the brands I have heard of, but I honestly don't know.

When in doubt I just mix in a teaspoon to a tablespoon of food-grade calcium carbonate; oyster shell flower is great too in that it will add a bit of variety to your substrate (and as you said it will act as a buffer longer).

You only need to adjust the pH of the casing layer when using a peat based casing layer as the peat degrades/decomposes over time it becomes more acidic.

Hope this helps.

I guess I should also say that I have used straight 3-in-1 with a great deal of success, but I'm working under the impression that making the substrate/casing more basic will discourage other molds from taking hold, as I usually have green spots by my second flush.

I guess the only way to know if ph is the problem is to test it.

If the green mold is setting in on a regular basis it could be a high spore count in your home.

AND/OR

Your pasteurization method of the substrate and casing layer may need to be revised.

the spore count here is high, no doubt, but I'm curious because I've never tested the ph of the 3-in-1.

I just started running a new hepa filter, so maybe that will help.

What are the ingredients of the compost (if you don't mind me asking)?

The HEPA will definitely help; I've got an ionic breeze which doesn't move a lot of air, but still makes a noticable difference.

3-in-1 is compost, manure, and topsoil (varies by location). I couldn't find a ph on the bag.

I had 2 little $30 hepas from walmart that didn't seem to help at all, so i hope this one does something.

It will usually say "pH adjusted" on the bag somewhere (if it has been), IME.
