Jar Salvage
    #666216 - 06/06/02 02:41 PM (22 years, 6 months ago)

I wasn't planning on posting here at all, since I've been reading through A LOT of posts and have read a lot about mushies, but of course, things had to get hairy, and now I don't know what I'm doing...any help would be greatly appreciated.
Here's my 'dilema'...I innoculated 8 jars with B+ a week ago. Yesterday I checked the jars and many of them were fairly dry but one or two had little dots of mycelium - I hadn't taped the holes well enough, but thought they might need some air anyway. I live in a very dry place so I guess they just dried up a little too fast - and it's very hard to create a high humidity storage area.
To make a long story short, I sterilized my working area with lysol and 70% peroxide. Then with clean hands emptied the jar contents into my pressure cooker (sterilized of course), and added a peroxide solution to moisten the substrate. There was a tiny bit of mycelium in one of the jars (that I could see), so I figured it would start to colonize even with the peroxide solution (something like 1% isopropyl). I then sealed up the pressure cooker to prevent it from drying out like last time... I have read that in dry areas contams are easier to aviod, but I'm not sure. Will this work?

well i dunno really but if that jar comes to life and u see contams this is what i do i empty the jar out in a glove box take the pice of mycelium the contam didnt get to yet and put it in a new jar that i sterlized with a pressuar cooker this way even if the jar gets contamed make a new jar and it will have the moisture and this way u can put tinfoil inder the cap with no holes so no water can escape

thanx for the advice,
actually i guess i didn't actually say what the problem was with the jars...they almost dried up. if I left them for another 2-3 days i'm sure they would be completely dried up and useless. i would have just poured water through the holes in the top but the substrate wasn't having that... so i emptied everything into a pot and poured water over them...sounds bad but i made sure everything was a sterile as possible. didn't want to waste the substrate/spores. if anyone else has had to do something like this how did it go?

The only thing I ever done was inject a few cc's of water with a syringe when mine dried up. Of course, I did use sterile water and the same precautions as I would when innoculating. I had excellent results. Since then I fixed my incubator and never had another problem.
