Drug-Induced Religious Experiences
    #6661862 - 03/12/07 03:42 PM (16 years, 10 months ago)

A lot of people talk about having religious experiences while tripping. I was wondering if some of you could tell me from personal experience, were you already religious (did you believe in God?) before this happened, or did drugs open your eyes and make you a believer?

before i took any kind of psychotropic drug, i did not really believe in god because i've never previously been aware of seeing god. the only thing i knew about god was what people have told me.

when i got a bit older and first started smoking cannabis, my awareness heightened and i had a suspicion that there could actually be something to this whole god thing. it was also a time in my life when i began to realize the manipulative side of the god-meme, and how it is being used by people to gain worldly power.

mushrooms eventually helped to open my eyes to authentic godhood; they taught (and are still teaching) me that god lies in the last place we'd look,

right in front of our eyes. :mushroom2:

I had been very open-minded and curious as child, but as I got older and saw the hipocrisy of the christian church, my faith faded away and I became very cynical and skeptical.  This all changed when I discovered psychedelics. I saw that my negative feelings towards religion were just as blinding as those religions themselves, and also that there was truth in all of them....just that the truth has become largely lost.

Now I've become a very spiritual person, and I am trying to bring this awareness of God being Love, and all of us one big family to all.

Mescaline opened my mind up to the Logos (man's knowledge). Tripping has taught me that we can know a lot more about the Transcendental realm of life than is commonly thought to be possible. I believe that through Transcendental practice we can experience and sample "God."

Here is a thread I made about a life-changing religious experience I had on acid. Prior to that, I had some spiritual inclinations, but not like l have since this experience. In a sense, though, it just re-awakened in me a spiritual impulse that I had as a child, but had been suppressed over the years through a secular, materialistic environment. At the time I had this religious experience, I was just emerging from the most skeptical, secular point in my life.

Ah, I didn't see this thread. I made a new post giving my account of a drug induced religious experience.

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/6666484/an/0/page/0

Would have posted it as a reply here if I'd realised.

i was not religious, i used to be a 'yuppie kid christian' as a 13-14 year old (brainwashed) and didn't actually have any comprehension of the power that was being taught. a blind faith, as it were. completely brainwashed and following the pied piper to a pit of knowledgeless and wisdomless doom.
i gave up on all that shit when i turned 15 and started smoking a lot of pot, and saw the church as this fucking rediculous fucking joke of lies and deceipt and absolutely no fucking idea of the shit they're preaching. at all.

then i had this insane religious experience on acid, actually met the god i knew existed, but got confused with the difference between the church and the god.

a lot like that passage from the Tom Wolfe book 'Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test" where he talks about being a single particle in a fingernail, and sometimes you realise and see that you are a part of a fingernail, and every once in a while someone will see that there are other fingernails over there, and then once in a long while someone will get an awareness that they are actually part of a hand, or an arm or oh fuck me an entire body, and then they look and get a glimpse of the face looking down at them, then go back to life as a particle on the fingernail knowing and rememberthat there is a face pu there that you are somehow still connected to... but the church fucks that story up and says "there is a god. believe in him or go to hell" like scaring people to join their army of non-knowing twit believers.

i dunno, you humans are funy creatures.

We're doomed so fuck it lets get high!

> A lot of people talk about having religious experiences while tripping.

I would call my experiences more Zen, or spiritual, rather than religious. To me, religious implies an organized dogma of some nature.

> I was wondering if some of you could tell me from personal experience, were you already religious (did you believe in God?)

Although my parents tried to raise me as a Christian, my mind, from as far back as I can remember, was set upon science. By high school, I was a die-hard atheist convinced that we are nothing more than big leaky bags of chemicals trying to maintain a chemical reaction. I couldn't understand how truly brilliant people, such as Albert Einstein, could be anything but atheist.

> did drugs open your eyes and make you a believer?

One hit of very good LSD changed the way I view the world. Am I a believer? Nope, the exact opposite. To believe is to close ones minds to possibilities. As an atheist, I was a believer. If forced to categorize myself, I would claim that I embody faith.

MDMA opened my eyes to interconnectedness, Mushrooms and Mescaline opened me up to the infinite possibilities of mind, and the possibility of the existence of other realms of experience outside of ordinary human perception.

I was definitely spiritual before i took anything, but got the necessary kick up the backside from these substances, leading me to find my path in this life, namely a Buddhist one.

(I'm a bit drunk atm, which is why this probably is written a little sloppily)

I think it's really important to separate 'religious experience' from the conservative church that we suffer from today. We need to make it known that the term 'religious experience' (a better term would be 'spiritual, although both terms are somehow a little different in this conext) we are talking about meeting a much higher power during the experience. We have come face to face and personally had a one-on-one with this entity. I have experienced it numerous times (a good friend of mine who's name is 'Caspar' (the holy ghost... heh) who always transforms into this projected image of god, like the fractal electricity of god is shot from the heavens down through him as my own little guardian angel, if you get it) and am not at all remotely a 'christian' or whatnot. However, I do believe in that stronger energy. that we are just as much a part of, a little fractal spin off not unlike a tree, which we are new growth of, but we all are related to the trunk, the roots, or the enrgy our tree is drawing from the earth, which is all part of a huge cosmic universe int itself. Cause and effect.... etc etc

but spiritual and relgious experiences can both be different things, like a spiritual one might be seing an entirely different side of yourself or your psyche which you never knew even existed, or meeting entitites or energies in the world, religious might be that which is profoundly 'holy' and is a connection to a higher power that is so great that it defies comprehension.

I have been to both spectrums, had the 'zen' experiences (complete nothingness, ego death, loss of every part of myself and my mind so that I cease to exist, and cease to have ever existed) and I also have had 'holy experiences' where I've met god, the holy entity above us that is the collection of all these energies concentrated into the centre of the 'clear light' (which is just a fuckin bottomless spiral anyway, which then vortexes out into infinity so, realy, it's not 'one energy' but infinity energies concentrated to one dimension or something aaahg i'm getting a mind loop and i'm not tripping haha)

anyway, both experiences are different but just as important and significant and both related in some way. It's a vortex of parallel dimensions that hurtles out into the cosmos and beyond which the human brain cannot comprehend, except buddha, who probably never truly saw ALL of it anyway...but got prety close.

Anyhoo.

Psychedelics have absolutely changed my life for the better, if it weren't for LSd I would not be in school right now making a better life for myself, I would stil be sitting on a couch in a run down apartment smoking endless cones... lsd showed me a side of myself I'd totally forgotted... I'm one of htose 'success' stories...

anyway, enough prattling on.

Oh, and god (good) told me that he's already won the battle against evil, you just have to decide for yourself which path you want to follow, because evil is the losing battle, always has been and always will be. was from day one, good always triumphs over evil, in the end. ALWAYS, so yeah... he just told me to pass that on to you.

Make up your mind.

I had little interest in anything remotely spiritual before a high dose mushroom trip. I loved philosophy so was not a 'die hard atheist' in the positivist sense, but i didnt believe in supernatural of any kind, nor really that the realm of what can be held any possible suprises in the future. It took me completely by suprise, I remember asking a friend there present and equally shroomed 'is this a spiritual awakening' totally puzzled by the idea.

While my outlook on life didnt change extremely - there was a fair amount of continuity and little of the way I considered it before was outright rejected, it was rather developed further - now an actual spiritual practice seemed completely necessary, while previously I wouldnt have given it a second thought. Another thing that was suprising in the experience was what that friend of mine called 'destabilization of ones ontology' - completely messing up what one may consider to even be possible.

drug-induced relgious experiences are 100% legitimate, just as legitimate as those crazy arabs who wandered the desert 2000+ years ago that are the foundationsof todays bible, which is read like it is completely normal. if the same things happened and were documented today, it wouldconsidered either crazy or blasphemy.

cynicism is the leading element :frown:

all experience is legit. (in my opinion, though this fact should be redundant and obvious)

the 'sober' experience is formulated by your interactions with oxygen, nitrogen, other particles in the air, other people, etc.

why should the addition of some kind of different chemical or a neurotransmitter's decision to behave slightly differently invalidate any experience?

'altered' states of consciousness implies that there is a singular state of consciousness, a phallacy you can put to rest by simply talking to any other being.

if it rings true, integrate it.

peace

Theres no definition of God here.

Firstly, we should decide on a precise defination or else we are all talking about different things - which is to some extent what has happened here.

I expect the common definition as the 'highest being' or the 'creator'.

Also what do you mean by religious experience. I have had many spiritual experiences when not on drugs and whilst using them but have never attributed this to 'God'.

I do see that there is an 'overmind' for life itself though. We and every living creature are all united in the fact that we are a part of life. Is life itself a seperate entity? As a whole, all life struggles for survival at any cost - that is the major constant that we are part of.
