This sounds really cool. Any one done research into different plants that might exchange more air than others? How about a Chia pet to add some decor?

One of those Jerry Garcia Chia heads would be damn cool. Plus your shroomies would do better, because, well, ol' Jerr would look after 'em.

Just as long as he doesn't 'sample' too many.

hey hey. did you sterilize your grass? I was just wondering if it might introduce any contaminates into the shroomies.

My uncle did that, it works great. You just sterilize your soil before planting the seeds in it.

Sterilizing the seeds would render them a contamination hazard as they would not germinate, and provide an open substrate for bacteria and fungi, just have a good light source( a single florescent works great ) but do not add heat, as this will tend to make things dry out.

can you sterilize the soil just by pressure cooking it? or can you also put it in an oven?

i remember i cooked soil once for a science project and it smells like ass.

I figured you could make a "closed system" with plants and even do away with misting all together. How did you keep the humidity high?

I did not sterelize the soil at all
It was not necessarry!! Just dirt from outside!
I guess you could bake it in the oven to steralize it if you are one of those paranoid people or something
I used perlite to humidify the terrarium

Also a little pond to grow the tadpoles in.
and some perch to keep the population down of frogs and some bass to keep the populatioon of perch down. Oh wait you can,t forget the catfish to feed on the bottom to keep the pond clean. Man this is starting to sound like there is a miniature world inside my Terrarium, Hey Benzl grow up.

I think that's a really great idea, and I would like to give it a shot eventually with a little modification. Would it work to try this using phalaris aquatica instead of rye grass, that would be really cool, killing two birds with one stone (or would that be stoning two...ahh, nevermind).

I'm growing rye grass now. I bought potting soil that was already sterilized.

Ive read in another post that this technique caused cobweb mold in the casings and the author discouraged it's use after having recommended it first.
Anyone using it on a regular basis?

I look forward for results since it is a promising technique.

Why would you be worried about sterilizing the soil inwhich the grass grows in,when you'll be putting insects and amphibians in your terrarium. Those animals carry contams all over them and would probably eat your mushrooms. Stupid idea. However I've always been interested in using plants for gas exchange. Seems like a good idea. Maybe with some pot plants. Streilizing the soil would be unecessary, the mycelium can fight off contams when it is mature. Like using Shroom-Wizards soil casing tek, he dosen't sterilize the soil and has never had a contam problem with it. Great experiment though Terified, always good to try new things,

Hi!

For a year now, I have been starting my Marijuana seedlings in small biodegradeable planters which I interspace between a few of the traditional PF cakes in my terrariums. I still air everything out every day or so, but I have found that both my dope seedlings and my shrooms have done about 10% to 15% better -- not a whole lot, but definitely statistically significant.

I have not tried this with any of my casing sutff, though.

Regards,
Springbok

has anyone else used plants for air exchange? what are actual advantages? We have some really plush green moss growing out back in the woods, and i have often thought about laying it on top of some perlite(wet) and letting the mossgrow and breath and create a good environment. There are several types of moss that ive seen. One is the short(and furrry) and the other is super kush.if you step on it you sink down like 1-2 feet.has anyone had success with plants?

The plants that produce the most oxygen are water plants.

I've been using rye grass for a couple of months now and have never had any trouble with any contaminates when the grass was in the terrium. I just soak the soil, then bake it at 250 degrees for about 15 minutes, let it cool, squeeze excess out after cooled then fill in a small rubbermaid tray. I clean the outside with a solution of water/bleach, spray the topsoil with h2o2/water then throw it in. Since I can't get to my babies as often as I'd like, and I can't use anything that makes noise(so no humidifier or fish pump), the grass helps with oxygen/co2 exchange.
Peace.

I've thought about and posted about this a couple times as I'm sure other people have; just never got around to it. But I think there was an important distinction--at the time I was talking about cakes; adding regular OR sterilized potting soil is a crap shoot when your terrarium is around 95% rH [at least in my room]. Casings are a whole other matter, the lower humidity [and good gas exchange] should blend perfectly with a good potting soil. In my experience, sterilized soil is definitely less-productive for the plant than non, though. Maybe it doesn't matter; the other issue is the space it would take up. Great to hear the 'fattening up' report, that's actually pretty convincing evidence.

I think this is just wonderful; I am running out to the garage now to see what kind of grass seed I have.

My initial thought was a small cactus, but those babies like drier conditions. That grass thing is wonderful.

Thanks for the idea.
