For new coir growers!

Heres how I do it its super duper ez..
One brick of coir to one gallon of water.
1. Take one gallon of hot water from your faucet and put into a pot, heat this up until you barely see a few small bubbles coming to top.
2. Place one brick of coir in a clean bucket, pale, or plastic tub.
** Bonus: add 2%-3% hydrated horticultural grade lime, or 1 teaspoon per cup coir. This will help keepcontams from overtaking the substrate! **
3. Dump the heated water in the bucket, pale, or plastic tub.
4. Let this set for one hour covered up with either foil, saran wrap or a lid (tubs have lids handy huh?)
5. Mix the coir and lime up well with gloves on, why gloves? Well, Roger Rabbit made a thread showing a close up of finger nails after hands being washed, it was mighty nasty still so gloves help.
5. Place the expanded coir in your trays, containers or whatever you intend the shrooms to grow from, and spawn with your spawn! A good ratio is 1:6 1:4 or 1:3, depending on how fast you want it to colonize.
Doing more then one brick?? Use 1 gallon to one brick coir ratio! Remember though, that coir expands 800% so don't put it in a little dinky container!

whats the dry weight on your brick??? I bought a huge one and need to cut it up and make smaller ones to add only one gallon of water at a time.

i have a question.
when spawning to coir, in a monotub for instance, what is the proper way to do it,
fill tub with coir, then pour colonized substrate on top and even out?
or
fill tub with coir, then pour colonized substrate on top and mix thoroughly?
does it make any difference?

I prefer to layer bulk subs rather than mix. Just toss in a few handfulls of substrate, then part of a jar of grains or other spawn, then another thin layer of each, etc., until full. Make thin layers so they fill in the gaps quickly. I've found this has less of a chance of breaking kernels of grain spawn which can allow contaminants to get a foothold in the uncolonized part in the middle.
Of course, careful mixing works too and many growers do it that way. I've just settled on the layerimg technique over the years because I've had a bit higher success rate with it. RR
