anyone knows if the dogs are able to smell the mushrooms if they are mixed in chocolate? It wouldn't be pleasant if i came to the airport and the dogs would start barking

most dogs arent trained to smell for fungus think about the problems associated with training a dog to bark at everything that smells 'fungal'
as far as ive heard or know, psilocybin has no detectable odor to it, nothing that a dog could be trained to hit up on.
now weed, coke, heroin...all those things have detectable odors even humans can smell.

Don't know about psilocybin having a detectable odor or not, but all shrooms don't just smell 'fungal'. They have lots of different odors. Dogs have been trained to distinguish cancer cells from normal ones, so it won't surprise me if they can be trained to tell i.e. a cube from an edible.

It's quite possible that they *can* be trained. Someone once linked to a source that even offered that kind of training for police dogs, among the list of things that it could be trained to detect.
I think the chance of coming across a dog who can smell cubensis in your lifetime is less than the chance of coming across a dog who wants a chocolate snack.

That's probably right.
Wonder if they train them to detect mescaline, or dmt etc. I've only heard about them finding meth, heroin, coke and weed. Atleast around here anyway (norway).

I think we also have to keep in mind that sniffing all sorts of fungus to train a dog might not be advisable for it's health.

I know a guy that has a drug dog. It can smell weed, heroin, and coke. I think that's about it, as far as he's told me..
The thing is, people with mushrooms *usually* have weed on them too, so...

Quite a leap of faith... physiology is seldom so simple.
I've always wondered why pigs are used to sniff out truffles rather than dogs.

I think they've switched a lot more to using dogs now for truffle hunting.

Yeah, don't pigs have the problem of always eating them when they find them?

If we used to be able to train retrievers not to damage the game they returned, I would think a dog could be trained not to damage a truffle it finds. *shrug*
I'm not trying to debate a side here, just curious if anybody knew...

From Wikipedia:
"They [truffles] produce a scent that mimics a male pig sex hormone, and for this reason, female pigs have been used historically in Europe to help find truffles. However, more recently, dogs have become preferred for truffle hunting since they can be trained to just find the truffles whereas sows eat the truffles as soon as they find them."
