What state and how much did you steal? Any prior offenses of any kind? How old are you? Depending on the answer to that you'll have a few options, in order of preference:
1. (Low value item, lax state, no prior offenses) this is the best outcome. If you stole something, say <$50 and live in a lax state, you'll probably get assigned to pre-trial diversion where you have to do community service, pay hundreds in fines, go to some anti-theft classes, but you will have no criminal record afterwards. Note if you don't complete this you will have a misdemeanor charge on your record.
2. (Low value item, lax state, no prior offenses) sometimes the DA, if the item value is low enough, will offer you a petty larceny infraction charge. This is like getting a traffic ticket and shouldn't show up on some record searches, but you will have a mark on your record which will be hard to remove later.
3. (High value item, lax state, no prior offenses) Your chances for an infraction charge are zilch, and you will most likely be charged with a felony. The DA will then probably offer you a plea bargain if it's your first time and drop it to a misdemeanor. You will probably have to fork over hundreds if not thousands for legal representation.
4. (Any value item, any state, prior offenses) depending on how many prior offenses you've had you're in a lot of trouble. Expect jail time.
I'm not sure what the consequences are for more strict states, but just assume that you'll get a record if you are in one.

Good deal. I love hearing stories where they actually catch the people who shoplift in there. There is no rationalization for such behavior.

something over 400$ i suppose, varies from state to state,if u can post your bail and get out then just avoid the cops for a year and the charges will be dropped after 1 year, if your charged though there is no limit on statute of limitations

You might face jail time then. Get a lawyer or if you can't afford it talk to a public defender ASAP.

yah if u have previous arrests most likely you,ll do a month maybe in county but maybe not jails are crowded these days courts dont like people coming back multiple times breaking the law jail is nothing to worry about just a bunch of dudes laying in their bunks and bitching about the food and whatnot

Its the first charge for stealing though.. Its funny cause the doctor prescribed me a SSRI and xanax like 3 days before this happened.. I wonder if that might help me have a little pull on the case.. because the medication made me really loopy.. and i'm a good student in college

You're pretty stupid, how about you work for the things you want and stop trying to take lazy short cuts such as stealing. Serves you right. I hope you get time, maybe then you won't be such a fuckhead.

ya if u havent been arrested for stealing before it wont be a big deal maybe a 400$ fine, in some states if u opt to go to jail they take 50$ a day of your fine for each day u serve, get off those meds and start running an hour a day 4 days a week instead, most misdeamenors r non or little jail time
