    #663853 - 06/05/02 09:54 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

well has this happen to any one but me i used filter disks on 48 jars and put the ring around the jar and put tinfoil over that losely, i opened my incubator today to find a real nasty smell i lost every jar with the filter disk on it to the same black mold and white mold these jars were PCed in diff batches with diff strains in the jars. no other jar was affected that didnt have the filter disks on them

That sucks! Sorry to hear about that. I haven't had that happen to me but that seems odd that only the jars with filter disks got contaminated. Was that the only common thing with all the contaminated jars, and were the jars that were okay in the incubator at the same time as the contaminated ones? Don't really have an answer for you yet. Hopefully someone else can come up with something. Sorry.

Geez man, 48 jars!?! Thats hella crazy.

Was there mycelium growing in the jars, or were the syringes just contaminated?

the other jars that r in there were put in there way befor the jars that got contams but the weird part is it seems like 1 jar had contams in it and it spread to the other jars cause some jars had strong mycelium growth in them and look like they just a day or 2 ago got contams in them and other jars have no mycelium growth just 100% contams. dont know if it is possable but it seem that 1 contamanated jar did all this u can oder spread contams cause the oder i got from the incubator was just nasty i had to take everything out and used 91% achol on everything

i got all the syringes from 1 place i will not say cause i dont think the syringes were contamanated it is almost impossable that 3 diff strains from 3 diff syringes coming from 1 place were all contamed.

How are the lids of the jars without filter disks set up? I know filter disks are supposed to keep out contaminates, but maybe they allowed too much air exchange and if you put a contaminated jar into the incubator it got into the jars with the filters (?). I'm reaching on this, but I'm trying to piece it together. I'll have to think about it some more.

the other jars have tin foil under the lid wit both the metal ring and the metal lid then after i injected spor water i duct taped the whole top acroos the holes and i taped the sides where the lid meets the jar

Were you using just the ring and the lid? I had just assumed you were using the metal disk too. If you weren't, then I agree with Vato. That's probably were you got jammed up. I've been trying out the polyfil tek and it seems to be working pretty well. In any case, don't get discouraged. It's alot of jars to lose, but at least you got a shitload more! Good luck with the rest, and keep us posted.

Yeah, contams can go through. Was there ever a time there wasn't foil on top? Contams could have landed on the filter disk and a drop of water could have fallen from the top onto the filter, mixed with the water and then dripped through the disk. Filter disks work well keeping contams out by air, but if contams grow through the lid or are carried through by water, your pretty much screwed.

the syringes could still be contamed becuase if all from the same place we could assume all the syringes for all three strains were sterlized together or using the same technique which could be flawed

Hi CBull- Consider purchasing a HEPA at E-Bay. Its well worth the money, especially if you are doing that many jars. I payed $60 for a Carrier Hepa Purifier that does 16*12 sqft. I run it on medium 24/7 & you can smell how clean/pure the air is now versus when I didn't own one. I'm happy I purchased mine & I think you too will be very happy to spend the extra buck. Plus you dont have to be so carefull about every movement around your mushies. Good Luck- Great Job grow'en GC's!

sorry to hear that cbull.

From the PF tek :
Load the 1/2 pint jar and level the top. With one hand, cover the mouth of the jar and grasp the top. Lightly slam the bottom of the jar on your other palm a couple of times to lower the level of the mixture. Leave a 1/2 to 3/4 inch space at the top. With a tissue or your fingertip, wipe the insides of the jar down to the substrate. Fill the top of the jar with plain dry vermiculite and level it off at the top. This upper layer will protect the wet substrate from air borne contaminants. It acts as a contaminant barrier. This is a Psylocybe Fanaticus original discovery. What this dry vermiculite layer does is protect the wet substrate from airborne contaminants and also absorbs and regulates moisture transpiration and condensation.

you really should wipe the inside of the jar.... to get the wet verm off that might have gotten on....before you add the 1/2" of dry verm to the top.... if you don't you can get contams.

I got contams this way once.....I learned quick to make sure I wiped the inside lip.
The moisure will act like a wick and bring in contams.

better luck to ya!
