Should you sterilize vermiculite before using as casing material? Does water have to be boiled or distilled? Anyone? Please hurry...

It doesn't really need to be sterilized, IMO. It should at least be pasteurized, however. Just throw it in a jar, cover with some plastic wrap, and nuke on high for 10 minutes.

Of course, if you have problems with contams, it might be better to PC it.

you *could* do all that

i've had perfect success using from-the-bag vermiculite, tap water, mixed with hands, cake broken with hands...no problems at all *shrugs*

Vermiculite contains no nutrients and is highly resistant to contamination. Just use bottled distilled or spring water mixed with a 10% solution of H2O2(3%) and you will be fine.

Just cased using cooled boiled water and out of the bag vermiculite. 2 cakes bottom and top layer casing.Washed hands used gloves sprayed air.Hope it works out.Patched a one cake casing today as well. Seems to be coming along fine. 5 Eqs to go still before birth...4 texans, and 4 more Tex just Innoculated. All out of magic solution. Need Syringe.
