help with sawdust cakes.

My millet grain spawn is looking good with only 1 contam so fair. I am going to start more oyster and shiitake spawn tonight. I also want to try some cakes made out of hardwood fuel pellets, oatmeal and honey. I was thinking maybe 10% oatmeal and about ½ teaspoon honey per jar. Sound about right?

Oats work. I'd skip the honey. Here's a couple of shiitake growing in one pint sawdust jars, supplimented with 20% wheat bran and ten percent gypsum on Alder sawdust. RR

Cool pic, Thanks! So the gypsum breaks down at 170 f and helps balance Ph and supplements nutrition, interesting. How do you buy your gypsum?

I get gypsum from a local nursery. You can just as easily break up a piece of drywall(sheetrock) and use it.
Gypsum is for the calcium and sulphur, both essential nutrients. It's not for ph control which isn't needed with sawdust. RR

could you use Gypsum Plaster, or would it have too many additives? haven't yet found an easy way to get hold of food grade gypsum in bulk in UK - best I've found is 1kg bag at the local Asian Wholesale Market.

No. The plaster is made to harden up to make casts. You don't need food grade gypsum. Use horticultural grade. I'm not sure what the wallboard used in homes in the UK is, but in the US, we use gypsum board with paper on each side. You can tear the paper off and crush the gypsum inside, or purchase it at the garden centers. RR

couldn't find it at the garden centre. they had clay breaker, which breaks up clay soil and has part gypsum in it. I think i'm going to contact british gypsum and get some wholesale contacts from them - ground gypsum is used for food and agricultural uses. Anyone from UK know where to get it from?

Check the clay breaker ingredients. My bag of garden gypsum has "for breaking up clay soils" written right under the word Gypsum. RR

That's a good source for people in UK. They have coir and all three grades of vermiculite too. RR

What is an good temp for shiitake spawn? The oyster grain spawn is 100% The shiitake is going very slow with temps of about 68F.

Perhaps you have a slow or degraded strain. My shiitake colonizes quart jars of rye grain in two weeks at 65F to 70F. It might go a bit faster if you can get the temp up a bit, but it won't make much difference unless you have a warm climate strain. RR

Nice work! How did you initiate fruiting? Do you have a picture of your growing chamber? I'd like to experiment with this. I'm thinking about trying Enoki on the sawdust variation cake.

The growing chamber is right behind me in the picture. Standard shiitake initiation, which is a cold shock for a few days to a week, followed by room temperature and a constantly fluctuating humidity. Good luck. RR
