My friend's first flush EVARRR! Critique and tips please!

Well, my friend (who you have all helped a ton with your answers) finally completed a grow. The strain is "Penis Envy" which has extremely small caps. She didn't know if they were ready to pick or not because there isn't much of a veil to break.

http://upload.jorsher.com/files/jorsher/tub/1stflush1.jpg http://upload.jorsher.com/files/jorsher/tub/1stflush2.jpg http://upload.jorsher.com/files/jorsher/tub/1stflush3.jpg http://upload.jorsher.com/files/jorsher/tub/1stflush4.jpg http://upload.jorsher.com/files/jorsher/tub/1stflush5.jpg ^ links to pictures if they don't load for you
As you can see, the pinset wasn't too great. There was a lot of sidepinning. I've heard that this strain isn't the easiest to pin, but what steps can she take to improve her next pinset?
Also, do ALL shrooms need to be picked, including pins? She noticed that some smaller ones that were barely bigger than a pin had broken "veils" so it forces me to believe that the whole tub matures at about the same time?
As far as the aborts that started to turn blackish on the cap, are these edible after drying or should she cut the caps off? Will the shrooms that she couldn't get to (like the side pinned ones) or the pieces of shroom that are still attached to the casing be ok to leave in there?
What does she do next?
Thanks Agar, Blutjager, RogerRabbit, HippieChick, Oatman, and everyone else I forgot?

Looks good. Definately get all of excess mushroom matter off of the project that was left behind from picking. That's a perfect food source for contaminates.
It feels good doesn't it?

Does she get all the pins too or leave them for the next flush?
Yes, it feels great!!! I'm so excited for her!

they all kind of look like joints.
try upping the FAE. i think high CO2 levels cause the mushrooms to develop large stems and tiny caps. but i'll have someone more knowledgeable verify that.

Well, that's just from the strain. It's penis envy, hence the phallic look. Has good FAE.

was this a double tub or a monotub? if its a monotub, you want some holes towards the top of the tub

Monotub. I'll let her know. What's the benefit of holes at the top of the tub? Can she leave the pins and small shrooms that are in there now?

the holes at the top will make those caps a little more proportionate to the stem. it is just a lack of FAE in the top portion of the tub

No it's not , it's the strain .
These had all the FAE they could want

while the holes at the top will help , those look like normal PE More FAE won't make those caps more proportionate to the stem .
Might increase the pinset
Good Job

even looking at the pictures you posted HC his caps are still less proportionate, they look like extended pins

I think you could've waited one more day to pick them. they seem like they could be a lot bigger within a day or at least 12 hours.

Maybe, I don't know. The caps were already "open." The strain I think is fooling a lot of you. I don't have much experience with mushrooms, but the gills were visible so she guessed they were done. She probably could have waited a day.
Can someone tell me if she should pick the small shrooms and pins or let them grow? I read somewhere after each flush to clean it, but there are sooooo many small pins, more than the first flush.

I leave all of the possible pins that I can possibly not disturb during harvesting. They'll eventually grow.
No point in making the mycelium waste energy re-knotting and forming more pins when it's already got ones made.
Aborts are another thing altogether though. If they're aborts, pick the suckers.

I'd pick them. You should harvest all at once IMO.
Then strip the casing layer off with the edge of a burger flipper. You don't have to strip every last bit of it off. Just lightly scrape the casing off until you hit substrate and then keep on moving. Move all of the casing material to one corner of the tub and then scoop the material out with the burger flipper into a container for the trash or woods. I like to take the edge of the burger flipper and use it to scrape the edge of the substrate along the walls of the tub as well. Get all of the mushroom matter that's left behind from picking and the mushrooms that may be growing in between the substrate and walls of the tub. A burger flipper works wonders for casing maintenance. lol. If you have a Shop Vac, you can then use it to vacuum up the remainder of the loose casing and mushroom material that you can't get with the burger flipper. You can use the vacuum attachment that's for cleaning the edges of carpet and tight spots to get all of the un-wanted stuff cleaned up around the edges of the substrate and the surface of it as well.
Then simply re-apply new material and let'r rip.

Well she let them go to see how it goes, I kinda agree with silly that picking them would be a waste of energy. She'll see how it goes without picking and next time try picking them all.
