Anyone actually filling out the 'Business name' box? Haha I guess BS'ing won't hurt. They shouldn't go too far into checking your business out.

I wonder what they'll do when they notice that the referrer is the shroomery and follow it back to this thread?

Anyways there's no point in wasting these free samples. Unless you have some electronics experience and are willing to build a project around the sensor it will do you no good at all.

Soldering SMT isn't really all that hard, but if you haven't done it before you have almost no chance of soldering this right on your first try.

+1

Please don't use the sample request if you're not already happy soldering SMD things. The sensors need special care when soldering anyway because they're sensitive to heating. That coupled with them being SMD will mean you'll almost certainly ruin them if you're not pretty good at soldering.

These aren't simple sensors either, you won't be able to just connect them to a battery and have a working temp/RH unit. So don't order samples if you're not also okay with moderately complex electronics.

My degree is in electronics and so can order these samples with a genuine name, but these facilities end up getting charged because tens of thousands of people use the sample option when they're not going to use the sample. Then people like me can't get hold of them and new things aren't made. So please think about the reality of you using the sensor before ordering one.

Can you post some details when you have the atmel/humidity sensor thing worked out?

I've got a couple atmega8's and an atmega16 laying around that I'd like to interface. I've always used serial communications rather than USB, but any info would be helpfull.

Wow!

0-100% RH
+/- 3.5% accuracy
+/- 0.1% reproducability!

That's a pretty damn nice sensor.

We have been programming a boebot that uses parallax basic stamps micro controller in my A.I. class; its been a fun project and got me thinking about something like this. ha ha little did I know people have already been thinking about this for a while. good luck to anyone attempting anything.

i haven´t read the whole thread, so please excuse my question...

did someone get the sensor?
if so, how long did it take after sending them the adress and name?
is the sensor packed in an air-bagged envelope or in a big package?

greetz

If you have to ask how to use it, then you probably can't... If you actually have electronics training, here's a more detailed datasheet: http://www.parallax.com/dl/docs/prod/datast/shtx.pdf

Section 2 is the most helpful.

i think you guys that received the sample or plan on ordering one and dont know what to do with it should send them to poke smot!.

that might cut down costs if youre really interested in one of his units when they are completed.

no point in wasting them.

there were quite a few projects going on using the sht11 on avrfreaks a few years back. their projects archive might be a good place to check out for sample code etc. if your new to the device.

as other's have stated, if you're not into electronics it's not for the faint of heart

thing's you'd need to know/learn to be successful

- how to write code (assembly/C usually for MCUs or PC interface)
- buy or build a programmer for MCU
- read and understand datasheet for sht11
- circuit / pcb design for interfacing (and nothing half-assed if controlling line voltage)

if anyone's just looking for a digital temp sensor go buy one for the 20 bucks or whatever they sell for nowadays.

and if poke smot! ends up marketing and selling what he creates, whatever the cost, it would be worth it compared to the hundreds of hours it would take someone new to do this for one project, though the knowledge gained is invaluable.
