Any Sci Fi / Fantasy Fans?
    #661546 - 06/03/02 09:16 PM (21 years, 9 months ago)

Anyone else out there a big fan of sci fi / fantasy books? My favorites are the Dragonlance books, especially those written by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman...
They also have a new trilogy out called The Sovereign Stone trilogy that I like very much. Their books have the ability to take me into a whole other world. Even though they are large I cannot bear to put them down.

I've read too many books to count, but some of my favorites were "The Chroncles of Thomas Covenant" by Stephen Donalson. They're actually 6 books, seperated into two trilogies. The first book I read was actually book 3, but I got hooked on it and read the rest of them. Basicaly about a leper who gets knocked unconsious, and awakens in a differnent land. The people and creatures of this land are being oppresed by an evil named Lord Foul the Despiser. This man Thomas, who doesn't believe this world is real, is believed to be the savior who will defeat Lord Foul and bring peace to the land. They are extremely interesting books and go into way too much detail to be described, but I highly recommend them.

Tannith Lee is pretty cool.Teh Tales From the Flat Earth were really COOL I was completey immersed inthose.
I was into the The Secret Books of Paradys. The Book of the Damned, The book of the Mad...etc.

I also like the Piers Anthony series Incarnations of Immortality. I read a few of his out of the Xanth series as well. I was in abit of a Anthony "space"' for a while. I tried the Apprentice of Adept series. I liked some of them.
I did, however, LOVE the Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey.

Hi Mystrys. I agree with you about Piers Anthony. I read one of his Xanth novels and thought it was pretty good. I don't remember which one though, it was a long time ago. Maybe I'll check out some more of his stuff.

Howdy Bruiser!
Yeah...I know what you mean. It's been so long ago that I read alot of these books. But the main prob for me is I have a HORRIBLE long term memory. Too many potholes
But I do remember finding Anthony when I was about 16 I guess...that's when I read On a Pale Horse....that started it all for me. I really enjoyed the genre whenI was younger and I started reading more horror stuff as I got older...inthe '80's of course..I read Stephen King,Clive Barker(still like him) John Saul, well...you get the picture. All very popular at that time with kids my age. ANyway...I have a more "eclectic" taste now, but I do love to go back and re-read the good ones. I may have to pick up a couple older ones and do some reading soon.

Anyone read any Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time. It's absolutely HUGE but great! He's written 9 1,000 page books, planning on writing 12 in the series. It's pure Sci-Fi Fantasy soap opera. Also, Raymond E. Feist is like Michael Crichton for Sci-Fi Fantasy. Anyone read the Fionavar Tapestry? It's a modern twist put on JRR Tolkien's LOTR.

Also a big fan of Julian May's galactic milieu/pliocene exile books (note my self-title)...

yay Dan Simmons! And Iain M Banks too.
my taste has been veering from the sword/sorcery type fantasy to "hard" SF for the last couple of years.
Also, David Zindell's Neverness series can't be missed.

I've always been a huge sci fi/ fantasy fan....
hearing the mention of xanth brings back memories, i used to be practically addicted to that series.
I'm curently reading "The Towers of Atuan" - the second in the Earthsea series by Ursula K Le Guin, good darkish fantasy that one of my friends loant me.
I must say that Anne McCaffrey will always be one of my favorites, I adore the Dragonriders of Pern... and of course, one cannot pass up Tolkien... amazing...
