Time Travel, John Titor, S-Theory, 2012.

I searched for threads on this but came up blank. This may sound ridiculous but it fascinates me.
From wikipedia:
Quote:
John Titor is the name used by the person or persons claiming to be a time traveler from the year 2036 who posted on several time-travel–related bulletin boards during 2000/2001, making many ambiguous predictions about events in the near future — all unfalsifiable due to restrictions forwarded in Titor's framing narrative — and giving an account of a supposed native time period. Proponents of Titor believe his claims cannot be substantiated due to the complex nature of the 'multiple time-line' theory. Whether or not John Titor was a hoax has been a topic of controversy on web-based paranormal discussion boards.
Quote:
In his online postings, Titor claimed to be a serving soldier who was assigned to a government time travel project. He was supposedly sent from 2036 back to 1975 to retrieve an IBM 5100 computer which he claimed was needed to "debug" various legacy computer programs in 2036. The postings also described various future events between 2004 and 2037, including World War III (predicted for 2015) followed by two decades of recovery.
Quote:
One such entry cited escalating conflict between Arabs and Jews as a harbinger of World War III:
"Real disruptions in world events begin with the destabilization of the West as a result of degrading US foreign policy and consistency. [...] The Jewish population in Israel is not prepared for a true offensive war. They are prepared for the ultimate defense. Wavering western support for Israel is what gives Israel's neighbors the confidence to attack. The last resort for a defensive Israel and its offensive Arab neighbors is to use weapons of mass destruction. In the grand scheme of things, the war in the Middle East is a part of what's to come, not the cause."
Quote:
According to IBM engineer Bob Dubke, Titor's statements regarding the IBM 5100's ability to emulate and debug mainframe systems were correct. This information was not publicly available when Titor made his declaration, which has led to speculation that the person posing as Titor must have been linked somehow to the development of this system.
Quote:
When questioned about the mechanisms of time travelling, Titor answered that he was no engineer. When asked to provide a better picture of his time machine, he replied that he wasn't a photographer. When asked to use the time machine to perform some paradoxical action (e.g., kill his grandfather), he replied that that would only affect this universe, but not his. He appeared to imply that there were many worldlines, and his time machine could not control its outgoing destination exactly, but could return to a worldline exactly similar to his own home. (It would be a different "Worldline" but would be exactly the same in his perspective as when he left). His originating "worldline" would, in turn, receive a John Titor exactly similar to the original. Therefore, his original "worldline" would indeed receive the benefit of his mission.
The "worldline" theory resembles the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics, although his use of the term is different from physicists' use of worldline, which refers to the path of an object through four-dimensional spacetime, not to an entire universe or history (what the many-worlds interpretation would just call a 'world').
Quote:
These are taken from John Titor's original statements and summarised.
* 2004 would be the last official Olympics due to global conflicts. * A Second American Civil War from 2004 to 2018 dividing the large cities against the rural areas * An event similar to the "parting of the Red Sea" will occur in 2012. * Association Football (Soccer) becomes the most popular sport in the United States. * Third World War in 2015, a gradual global escalation that was ended by Russia bombing American, European, and Chinese cities. o Sometime before this point (referred to as "N-Day") China forcefully annexes Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. o Chemical and Biological weapons are used, and some "non-lethal" weapons turned out to be quite lethal. o Australia successfully repels a Chinese invasion. o The war kills almost 3 billion people. * Post-war o Communities of survivors gather and grow around libraries and universities. o The United States splits into five regions based on various factors and differing military objectives. o The US Constitution is changed by a Constitutional Congress. + A President is elected for each of the five major areas of the US. + The powers of the union government are more defined and reside at the county and state level. + The Vice President is elected separately. + The US Capital is in Omaha, Nebraska. * Life in 2036: o Society + Military service plays a large part in day-to-day life. + Capital Punishment is still implemented. + Communities have returned to a family/community centred state, advised by elders. + Texas is Hispanicized. o Religion and Beliefs + Religion is far more personal and plays a major part in day-to-day life. + The Ten Commandments have been restored to the "10" that God gave Moses. + Sabbatarianism, or worship on Saturday is a common practice. o Technology + Wireless internet is ubiquitous. + Television and Telephony are delivered via the Web. + Books and other hard media are now distributed online and printed from local hubs. + Microsoft and Yahoo! no longer exist. Napster still distributes music via the web. + Power is not distributed over long distances. Alternate forms of generation are common, the most prevalent being solar. o Environment + The environment is heavily affected by radiation. The lack of potable water is the biggest environmental issue. + Global Warming has had little effect. Temperature is about the same although there were anomalies after the war. o Health + The birth rate is much lower, due to a high number of birth defects and stillbirths. + Mad Cow, or vCJD in humans, is a devastating public health problem. + Cures for AIDS and Cancer have not been found. Viral therapy is used for Cancer.

John Titor on 2012:
Quote:
Does anything happen in the year 2012? I've heard stories about the world ending. In my 2012, I was 14 years old spending most of my time living, running and hiding in the woods and rivers of central Florida. The civil war was in its 7th year and the world war was three years away. Yes, there are unusual events in 2012 but they do not cause the world to end. Unfortunately, I have decided not to discuss events that you or I can do anything about. It is important that they be a surprise. Perhaps you are familiar with the story of the Red Sea and the Egyptians?
Anyone else heard of him? Not often you encounter something "unfalsifiable"

Time travel is not only possible, but is a reality of everyday life. Try this out some time: walk west (or east if you feel you're really up to travelling to the future), and you've just travelled thru time! woo hoo!

Titor lost all his steam when the civil war didn't start in 2004
It's good fiction, though.

I doubt that...John Titor "went back" to his time at some point in 2002 I think.

Xurzax, I know who you are talking about its in the horizon documentary Time travel, he is not john titor. But the thing about the civil war was explainable, as it was put by himself this "worldline" is variable by around 2% and the civil war did start in his worldline. Its theorized that certain events would have happened in our worldline that would have altered certain outcomes. Read his posts at http://www.johntitor.com/Pages/2036.html before dismissing this completely.
fireworks_god, you seem familiar with it, whats your take?

Well, I'm not that familiar with it, other than some discussion that has went down in the past concerning it in P&S, but, honestly, I think it was simply some dude on the internet with a lot of time on his hands.
I admit that my scientific understanding of time is not the best, but I just don't get how time travel could be possible in the first place.

I take this with a pinch of salt, naturally skeptic. John Titor himself said that scepticism is a good thing and we should hold on to it, he also mentions that he was never trying to impress anyone, nor change anything and his arguments are relatively consistent. Whether or not I believe he is a time traveller is a bit of a moot point, I take the meanings he expresses and the concepts he brings to be of far greater value. Based on quantum mechanics and the infinite alternate reality theories anything is possible, he does not really travel time but moves to an alternative timeline with close enough similarities to successfully complete his assigned mission. Using this theory, though time travel is not yet possible in this worldline does not mean it isn't possible from his.
Quote:
Why don't you give us more detailed information about the future so we won't be so skeptical? I think skepticism is a good thing and no one should lose it.
You could still give us details about the future that wouldn't harm anyone and still add to your credibility. Again, I do not seek to add to my credibility. There is no point to it. Actually, by providing information that was useful, I would be adding to your collective fear that I am real. In that case, this cycle we are in concerning "truth" only spirals and gets worse.
He may very well be some dude with a lot of time on his hands, but if this is a hoax it is an extremely elaborate and well thought out one that is in itself very interesting. His worldline appears to be a return to community values, his takes on our society is very interesting including his stance on us now:
Quote:
Do people know where you are? Can you communicate with your home? No. They do not know where I am and I cannot communicate with them. Interesting idea though. From their point of view, I will return almost exactly at the same moment I left. From their viewpoint, I will only have aged more than expected.
You do not rewrite history. I can only affect what happens here just as easily as you can. Why do people in this time period worry so much about time traveler's destroying their world line when they have no problem doing it themselves every day?
My goal is not to be believed. Most people do not take news of the war very well but I find that everyone believes it's inevitable. Even in your own history, are not great inventions and discoveries made during a time of war in your effort to kill and maim in new and more efficient ways?
No, I do not work for GE or any other company. Are "stock tips" really the first thing you want to know about in the future? As a representative of your time period, do you realize what that says about you? You should probably know that this time is not remembered for its selflessness, charity or ability to work together.

We had a little debate about this last year, or something.
I still have bad ratings from telling some Tin-Foil Hat Loonie that he was fucking crazy for believing this nonsense.
I'm going to stop myself now before I say something worse...

I believe anything is possible, if you can accurately and intelligently falsify him i'd be interested in hearing it. Read his posts thoroughly before completely smearing it. Again to re-iterate, I don't completely believe this, I'm more interested in his points and concepts.

I haven't read all his posts but I have some knowledge of the more "generic" ideas of time travel. I also know that most physicists no longer support string theory so that tenth dimension video isn't a great way to view the higher dimensions. However, time travel is possible but not in the sense most people have it. If you were able able to create and sustain a wormhole with an entrance and exit then drag the entrance near something with an incredible amount of gravity time would go slower for you than for people at the original wormhole. If you were to then enter it and come out the other side you would be back in the past when the wormhole was created. You could only go back as far as when the wormhole was created so there is no possibility of going to the 1800's. This is what I remember, I'm sure I'm missing something or typed it difficult to understand. I don't have the books or articles around, but what I read seemed quite plausible.

It hasn't reconciled the differences between relativity and quantum mechanics that is was supposed to. Like I said I don't have an of the documentation and articles on the subject matter with me so I'm going on memory. There are lots of problems with string theory I know that. Again this is not to say that someone won't actually figure out something that redeems it. Science changes all the time and thats for tangible things, now try to do math in multiple dimensions that are very abstract ideas for the human mind. So I can neither falsify what he says nor prove it, however with my knowledge on the subject I am extremely skeptical. (As i said I haven't read all of his claims either)
