Fish emulsion with coir as substrate
    #6613560 -

Hi I'm planning on using coir as a substrate to spawn to and want to add nitrogen with out burning. I couldn't find any worm casting locally but did find some fish emulsion. Anyone know a good ratio of the fish emulsion to a brick of coir? thanks.

If you're growing plants, use fertilizer. If you're growing mushrooms, use substrate materials. Chicken manure at 5% is a great additive, as is coffee grinds at up to 50%, and steer manure at up to 50%. If an animal eats grains or straw, its manure is fine to use. Don't use ground up animal guts such as fish emulsion, or manure from carnivores such as bats, dogs and cats, etc.

ok.. I came across some black hen made by black cow guys. Could I just use that at 5% with the coir? Can I pasturize it together? and I was planning on casing with a verm/coir like 70/30 or would you recommend casing with peat?

70/40 verm-coir is fine as is 50/50 peat-verm. Don't forget lime and gypsum. Chicken manure added to the substrate will give a few monsters. When you open the bag, if it smells at all of ammonia, let it sit on your back porch in the sun and air for a few days until the smell goes away. This will work winter or summer, even in below freezing weather. Yes, mix it right in with the coir, hydrate and pasteurize at 140F to 160F for an hour to 90 minutes, but no longer than 90 minutes.

alright hey roger i was wondering with the chicken manure you said 5% to the coir. Is that when the coir is gonna be hydrated or before. My coir says it maked 7-8 liters so that about 8 quarts.. so i should add .4 of a quart for every brick of coir? does that sound right? and i have a soil ph tester but i just wanted to know where to start with the lime about how much for a brick of coir? thanks for your help

That's about right. 1 cup of hydrated chicken manure per 20 cups hydrated coir would make 5%.

Add gypsum at ten percent as well. 1/2 teaspoon of hydrated lime per cup of coir/chicken manure will help give a bit of contaminant resistance, but it's optional. Lime is far more important in casings where part of it never colonizes. Substrates colonize fully, therefore can hold thier own.

1 cup of manure per *19* cups is 5%
1/(1+19)=5%
1/(1+20)=4.76%

not that significant tho

Right. One to twenty is easier to remember though. Nice catch.
