greyish white stuff.. WHAT IS IT?
    #662014 - 06/04/02 08:29 AM (14 years, 6 months ago)

I started 4 jars using pf tek method. Since we did not have a presure cooker we used a giant pot and water. After we were done i i noticed some greyish spots that kinda looked like water got in through the tinfoil lids. There were only a couple spots on each jar near the bottom. So we continued thinking nothing of it. now i am starting to get worried. they have hardly grown in size at all but now that the jar is starting to colonize it looks kinda wierd when the myclyeum(totally forget how to spell it) is growing over the greyish white stuff. I am going to try and post a pic later tonight. Anyone have any idea what this is?

I think that jar is doomed , sorry.
If the other jars look like this one i'll say that's a lost batch, try to take another pic but rotate the jar to the left only a bit, it's probably some black/greyish mold.

Peace,
MAIA

Can anyone identify this contam?? I am going to try using hippies bleach dunk. I probobly won't eat them even if it appears to work. Just wondering how dangerous this contam might be if injested.

I'd wait awhile and let it grow. It looks like it might just be mycelia. With the cakes I've grown sometimes the mycelia is more of a grayish color at first and then turns white as it colonizes more completely (I think it looks grey because it isn't as thick and you see the dark verm/BRF showing through) or maybe they are just kind of wet? It is possible that water leaked in, but if you did it correctly there will also be moisture in the substrate to begin with for the mycelia to grow on and sometimes the moisture condenses on the sides a bit depending on temp and things. I've had cakes that looked like this and had no problems with them. But be sure and keep a close eye on them and make sure it doesn't get worse and that it isnt a contam. I don't think giving them a bit of peroxide or one of the other methods of killing contam would hurt though. I've found that sometimes sticking them in the fridge for awhile will kill most of the nasties and leave the mycelia since the mycelia is more resiliant to low temperatures, but this may lead to premature pinning and things like that and will lower your yield

That is contamination, mycelium can't get dark grey for gods sake. You can let mycelium overgrow that section but i would open the cake in half to see if everything is alright, anyway it's up to him.

It can be a light white color though and not very thick.

did you ever grow these out? i'm wondering if they're okay since my jars have pretty much the same shit on the bottom, and I pressure cooked them. when I birth them i'm gonna give them a whif and see if they're okay.

Same thing happens to my cakes. After awhile, the mycelium turns a stoney-gray color.

I think so anno. It looks like poorly mixed pf tek with mycellium. If there is a contam im missing it.

They clumps of white grey stuff looks like brown rice? If thats a growththen yeah its contammed.
