Hi again. The PF Casing Tek featured at the shroomery FAQ says that the substrate for the casing should be perlite. But I am reading on this forum that vermiculite should be used instead? Which is best? I am planning on using the coco coir method...

You don't want to use perlite as a casing. You would never put perlite ontop of your broken up cakes. Maybe at the bottom of the casing to absorb and distribute moisture. Even then I would cover it with some vermiculite before placing my cakes ontop.

Really? Could you pass me the link to it?

Actually, I have read it over any number of times and I'm sorry to report I am NOT confused - it most definitely says "perlite to cover bottom of pan" - here is the link in any case:

So, perlite on the bottom, a little sterilized vermiculite on the next layer, then the crumbled cakes on top of that and cover it all with the coco coir? Thoughts on this?

That's ok, people like to pick on new people. The problem is you said casing with perlite. Which a mature person would not criticize you for this but do the nice thing and simply tell you.

Anyways it's not casing because you don't want your cakes or casing touching the perlite. The perlite is put on the bottom with some water and it helps with the humidity.

Vermiculture is used a lot of times as the top layer between the jar lid and the actual cake. I don't know if it's used for casing or not. I read a lot of good things about the coco coir.
