Invented by mother nature, refined by society

The Great Malfunction.
-Okay, it's not so great

Ah, here I am. It's good to be made out of thinking meat. I'm so thankful that my ancestors remembered to write down their formulae so that I can read up on them later. You see, I'm a living chunk of humanity that seems ready to spoil, but with the aid of modern medicine I've been able to put that nasty bit of the process off.
Would you do me a favor dear? You see that cord? Give it a pull, will you? Oh, my heavens...
So my grandfather has been on the edge of death ever since I can remember. Every week he has a bag of pills delivered to my house where he picks them up later. He only takes the ones he likes, he knows what they all do, and when he feels that he isn't getting enough attention, he lets some of them go out with the trash and develops the condition he decides will work the best. I don't recall what the names of these pills are, he tells me what does what, but I don't really care. "As long as they keep you here with me." I tell him. Or rather, I would tell him, if I had an inclination to that sort of thing.
One lung, a bad heart, and enough staying power to make it work for a year or two more.
It's all alright, as long as we've got Grandma to keep him in order. When he misses something in the conversation, make sure you shout it real loud Grandma, it's for his own good, right? And turn the heat down, it's almost 12 degrees C in here, good God, we wouldn't want Gramps to have a pneumonia free year. After all, whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger right? Well, this old man needs all the strength he can get, so let's throw him some curve balls.
A quick look back at the gravel crushing years, the suicides, the secrets, what do we end up with? Where do I enter the picture? Well, Eventually my mother emerges from the family tree -the tree down the street with its roots so cleverly hidden- and my odyssey begins. Now if I could just hold my concentration long enough I could turn this into the movie of the week.

I hope the reincarnation theory is bogus, as much as I'd enjoy flying, I don't think I'd like eating worms.

Websters Dictionary:
formula- A nutritious food for an infant in liquid form.

I don't remember being in a liquid form. Damn, that would be sweet.
