Faster???
    #659405 - 06/02/02 05:10 PM (21 years, 10 months ago)

Hi, i would like some advice on generally speeding up the PF jar process...
If i introduce light to the PF jars from the first day after inoculation would that make it pin faster?.Would that have any kind of disadvantages? Is the only reason for the jars to colonize in the dark ,to avoid pinning before 100% colonization???Any other tips for faster life cycle would be appreciated.
Thanx in advance.

A incubator at proper temperatures. A good cold shock. Ideal pinning conditions and then ideal fruiting conditions...thats as fast as you'll get.

Thank you very very much Phrozendata....
But what abnout the light???
Doesn't it affect the jars if they are colonized in the light?
Dont they pin faster???

If you want faster colonization, use some filter disks.
If you can't get filter disks that fit your jars, put a 1/2 inch layer of dry verm at the top of your pf jar and don't put the lid on tight.(watch out for contams)
I you want to keep from loosing your head, be very patient.

no light when colonizing!!!! you can introduce light when the cake is almost 100% and it will get pinning moving along, but light will cause the mycel network to pin instead of colonize the cake.

Filter discs. I recommend Micron Magic Filter Discs, I haven't tried BoxTop's Tyvek filters, but I generally stray from Tyvek in general. I can gaurantee that using filter discs will speed up colonization. The rest is subjective, ideal fruiting conditions are the best you can get, but the filter discs are an absolute must.

Filter Disc's a must? I thought so too. Untill I ran out. I inoculated a 1 quart grain jar on Friday w/ 2cc's of PESA (wheat grain substrate, no gypsum) I noticed (before the inoculation) that I ran out of Micron Magic FD's. I was impatient so I said screw it, I used a layer of tinfoil over the top of the jar, then went the micron magic canning lid (the one w/ 1 hole in the middle), then a final piece of tinfoil. I just figured I would pray and it just might work with no contam's. Well, it is Monday and the jar is about %27-30 colonized starting at the top.

So I am guessing that filter disc's might not be a must. With grain anyway.

you can also use polyfill (that nylon fluff matierial) as a filter. poke a screw driver through the lid (1/4 inch hole) and run a wad of polyfil through there. works like a filter disk except it won't dry out the substrate because of the smaller hole.
