How to drill through glass
    #661231 - 06/03/02 06:16 PM (21 years, 6 months ago)

This could be a repeat. Didn't check. But just in case anybody wanted to know how to make a drain for their 10-gallon glass fish tank, here's the info. It works. I've tried it. Should work fine for a 1/4-inch hole or even much bigger. Just make sure you get the right size bit.

Go here for the directions:

And these guys have all of the diamond-tipped drill bits you'd need for real cheap (about $25):

I didn't find that a drill press was necessary at all. Just a normal drill, diamond-tipped bit, water and putty. Any putty will do. I do have one recommendation though (which may apply for those who do not use a drill press): it's impossible to tell when you're going to poke through (the water gets real muddy with glass bits) and it's really easy to fracture the glass with the drill when you do. To avoid this, lump the putty circle with the little water pond in it real close around the drill bit. This way, when the drill bit pokes through, the glass will be cushioned by the putty (assuming you have about a half-inch of it there). You shouldn't need to really push down on the drill very much. In fact, I recommend against it if you want to avoid fracturing your glass. I also didn't find that drilling close to the edge increased the chances of fracture. You can pretty much drill anywhere as long as you just take it slowly.

It was oddly really satisfying having finally drilled drainage holes in my tanks. I've been trying to figure out how to do this for years and this method works really well.

ive always just covered whatever i was drillling or decorating(bongs or whatever) with duck tape and used a dremmel with a diamond bit and this works with even thin fragile glass although it is alittle more difficult and one needs to go about it a bit slower
