Tried it and it didn't work. I'm not totally sure why it didn't work, but here are my observations:
The pump recommended by the mister people didn't pump hard enough. I purchased one that was rated for a 50 gallon tank. If I was to do it over (which I'm not), I'd purchase a pump that was 2-3x the air exchange rating I did get. In fact, I'd probably buy the strongest one I could and just make sure that the air flow is adjustable.
A big problem is that the tubes are just too small. The whole thing works with the real thin clear pvc used in fish tank setups for bubbler stones. It measures 3/16 inch in inner diameter. If you look at the cool mist humidifier tek, the optimum hose inner diameter is on the order of 5/8 inch. More than that allowed a fine mist through which saturated the cakes. And now that I've seen this pseudo-misting sponge-based system in operation, I'm guessing that there is some cutoff between 5/8 inch and 3/16 inch diameter when no mist gets through. But perhaps the real problem here is that the humidity generator, ie the sponge and bubbler, is really shitty compared to a cool mist humidifier. I didn't even see fine water particulites in the upper section around the sponge. Just a handful of big water drops on the side of the container around the sponge. Kind of like what you'd expect if you put a bubbler into a jar in your terrarium, except now imagine enclosing the jar and running the result through a 3/16 inch inner diameter tube. No way. Just not gonna work unless that 3/16 tubing is like 1/2 inch long, but even then, I have my doubts.
Although I haven't really tried it yet, I think the cool mist is the way to go. I'm also thinking that it's probably possible to mist many, many tanks with the cool mist system if a thick 1-2 inch inner diameter inner column pipe is used as a "highway" of sorts before running the 1.5 foot 5/8-inch tubing to your tanks. No actual experiences yet with this, but I'm pretty sure it's gonna work.

My advice is: try one experiment at a time because if/when you have problems, you won't know what caused them.
