Bush Administration Moves to Sell National Forest Land

Found this article on Digg.com
read me
It's great to know that our government is negating any progress it may have made towards incorporating conservation into its agenda just as the life on our planet is facing perhaps the most threatening chemical imbalance since methane skies.
woot.
Perhaps we shouldn't be trying to balance our budget by exploiting our natural resources? Perhaps it would be easier to reduce extraneous spending and reallocate current funding in a more efficient manner?
just a thought

That's some fucking bullshit right there.
"Hey, lets cut down EVEN MORE of our ancient trees and destroy more of the ecosystem to fund some schools. Forget taking some of the billions in war efforts... that's important money!"

Yeah... I'm wondering why we are trying to sell American National Forest... we could just go to Brazil.. and tear down the rest of the Amazon Rainforest.. there's only a few acres left anyway.

Congress would have to approve the land sales, but it has rejected similar recent proposals.

the solution: buy a couple acres, then just sit on them. maybe build yourself a nice little isolated cottage in the middle of your tract so it's useful, but if you own it, it can't be clearcut and paved over.
I'm gonna check out the costs, and honestly try to raise enough money for a good 5 at least. Edit: just realized it says about $320 an acre at the end of the article, quite an amazing land price when you think about it

if he gets NEAR sequoia, I'll get a group of people to picket in front of the White House.
Fuck them, there's a reason it's National Forest land -- it's a name given to protect it from harm and misuse.
this thread makes me sad =(

"plan to raise $800 million over the next five years to pay for rural schools"
they mean that the money is going to go into missiles that blow up schools in foreign countries.

Pretty ridiculous when you consider the U.S.Government spends at least $200 million each and every day to fund the war.

It's sad to say, but this shit goes on all the time. Where do you think we get all of our wood, from privately owned land,... hardly.

sequoias have no value as lumber, though ... their wood is too brittle to have any use in the world beyond being alive!
although it said nothing directly about Sequoia, the only image with the site was of Sequoia, and that troubles me ...

They said most of the land was in California, where do I find out about buying it. $325 dollars an acre, that's a gold mine in this state we've been protesting since the 60's with little effect, let's beat them at their own capitalist game. I live in the hills about 5 miles out of national forest land, I got 2 acres with a tiny house on it and its worth $280,000, if we got together we could really do something. I have children who I'd want to have the choice to raise their children in the city or in the woods.

in actuality the wood is quite decay resistant making it ideal for cheap picnic tables and even fencing, sometimes the tress form burls that are incredible, these are usualy used in fine furniture

Is it better to stand on a street corner with a picket sign while the land is being sold or to be the one buying it? Idealism is great but practicality transmutes it into reality.

We'd have to somehow get in line to buy ahead of the lumber companies though, because they're going to be the first buyers.
