Why do we always look to the sky?
    #6606798 - 02/24/07 08:57 PM (17 years, 1 month ago)

obviously religion can play a large part in this, but why do we, as humans, always look to the sky in time of trouble, or when looking for answer, or to gain relief. The sky and the stars both.

Do we look to the sky and not to the ground because we are always in contact with it (when not in contact with cement or pavement) or maybe because we can't get there.

What about ancient peoples that may not have had a religious system, or those that did not have gods/entities which dwelt above?

Even children, especially younger ones without religious indoctrination, can be caught just looking, staring up.

What philosophical or spiritual implications does this have?

natural video effects include the occasional wipe into frame from above.
kinda like enter stage up...

if we are dreaming, it is reasonable that this could be expected.

in times of trouble, maybe
we are not convinced that we are quite awake
and we check up, in case something will come in
and wipe away the mess.

The element of 'space' is expansive. Looking at the sky, especially on one memeorable early acid trip - maybe my third or fourth - staring into a cold grey drizzly sky while lying on the ground, like a camera lens set to 'Infinity,' I had an Experience of Infinity. It is not that Infinity is up there or out there, it is a matter of our optical equipment set to have a particular psychological effect. It is a type of set and setting.

The psychological orign of the idea of space, or of the necessity for it, is far from being so obvious as it might appear.

Isn't looking up when we access our creative thinking. Possibly why we look up to solve problems.

I think it's because space seems to embody the greatest unknown frontier to us. Though our minds may be infinitely complex we are constantly experiencing them, and though the earth and its nature may be infinitely complex as well, we have also obtained vast amounts of information through research and again, we are always in contact with the earth.

As remarkable as our minds are and our planet is there can be an infinite number of planets out there with beings whose minds may just totally trump ours. What's up there seems to truly be beyond our reach, anything can be there - all of the questions and all of the answers, floating, somewhere.

It is entirely open, free, untamed, unruled and without boundaries in stark contrast to our planet Home.
