Help make my balcony green!
    #6605364 - 02/24/07 11:41 AM (17 years, 1 month ago)

So.
I will be growing some ethnos on my balcony this summer and hope that someone can come with interesting suggestions.
The important thing is that I cant grow anything that is poisonous to my cats.

I have decided on some these are:
Phalaris(not sure what sp. yet, probably arundinacea)
Poppy(hens and chickens) will probably have 6 or so 10" pots for these.
Calycanthus floridus(common sweetshrub)
Eucalyptus globulus(eucalyptus)
Coffea arabica(coffee)
Humulus lupulus(hops)

and a question...do you know how much time eucalyptus have to be grown before you can harvest something without hurting the plant?

The eucalyptus will be for decoration and the pleasant smell. I plan to keep them for many years:grin:

Thanks for the suggestions. Will read up on them.

More input folks!

Way ahead of you! But they are my indoor plants.
And also: cacti on the ground is a nono because of the cats.

Coleus is extremely easy to grow, beautiful, and lots of colors/patterns to choose from.

If you really think your cats will eat your plants, there is some concern with all the plants that you mentioned.
Not sure, but I think Coffea and Calycanthus are the worst but only the fruits on the Calycanthus contain the toxin.
Humulus and Eucalyptus can cause skin irritation, or worse.
Phalaris kills sheep.

I was actually thinking of that one too.. Will perhaps do that. Just going to be a pain to avoid that they get to it when its small..

Namaste: What vines could I grow? Does Banisteriopsis do well in pots, I will be forced to move it inside during the winter, will they survive?

B. Caapi needs high levels of humidity so it most likely wouldn't work.

The catnip generally doesn't attract cats until it has been dried out, either way it would be entertaining.

Any kind of vines will do. You could start Morning Glories from seed, or buy some starts from a nursery. Passion Flower is a really nice one.

I'm thinking of maybe putting out a couple of auto-flowering hybrids.. not sure which yet.. perhaps lowryder #2

namaste:
I will build a small greenhouse for tomatoes and salvia d, perhaps that will be enough for caapi?
I'll perhaps get some MG heavenly blue..

B. Caapi needs high humidity but it definetly can be hardened of to low humidity, just grows slower. Phalaris won't be worth the trouble unless you can plant a whole yard of it. Passion flowers are beautiful, and the worst black thumb in the world could get morning glories to grow, Rivea corymbosa is much hardier than HBWR, depending on where you live you might be able to keep it outside all year.

passion flower! i got a giant one in my backyard...but it's not really healthy right now, i'm working on it...

the fruit is great as food, and somewhat sedative...(here they are pretty common..maracuja...)

and with the leaves you can make a smoking blend...i already did so i'm sure you'll feel something...

the feeling is just great...that "warm blanket" feeling...;D

Thanks for the input guys.

ngnyus: The n,n-DMT contents of p. tuberosa I have found is around 0,1% and 0,022% 5-MeO-DMT dry weight, and the grass gets high. so I'll might get atleas 200g of dry grass before the summer is over, that makes 4 pretty strong doses of DMT and 4 or so doses of 5-MeO-DMT..

Grow a "piss-off-plant" (see Richters) to keep the cats away.

If I where to try my luck with Anadenanthera, should I get peregrina or colubrina?

Also I might be getting some Acacia phlebophylla seeds, anyone know if there are any toxic compounds in this species leaves(which contain 0.3% n,n-DMT)..
Wouldn't wanna grow it just to find out its useless:D

If you need some phalaris seeds I have plenty of P. Aquatica, send me a pm, but in limited space I just think you would have much better luck with Acacia obtusifolia or mimosa hostilis, phalaris leaves are a PAIN IN THE ASS to grind, Last year I harvested a couple of paper bags full, and ended up throwing it in the compost heap.

I was thinking of going for Acacia phlebophylla instead, it has much higher DMT-concentrations in the leaves.. The seeds are insanely expensive though(probably because it is endangered)..
Might get both..

Won't freezing the phalaris make it possible to grind/crush? Or throwing it in a food processor?

Freezing it does make it a LITTLE easier. But from my experience (I got a tiny little food processor which probably has somethin to do with it), I spent about 10 hours of work to grind up what turned up a half pound of dried leaf.

That sux big-time... Well might grow it anyhow, just for the hell of it..

Well my list has been somewhat changed:
Phalaris
Poppy(hens and chickens) will probably have 6 or so 10" pots for these.
Eucalyptus globulus(eucalyptus)
Coffea arabica(coffee)
Humulus lupulus(hops)
Ipomoea tricolor
Anadenanthera colubrina or peregrina
Acacia obtusifolia
Acacia phlebophylla
Mitragyna speciosa

And a couple of non-ethnos:
Alstroemeria
Aquilegia cultorum

Any of these I should skip?
What are the best way to get the Anadenanthera happy?
Anything more to add?

I am still weighing some of the pros and cons with the suggestions I've gotten so far, might get some Passion flowers...
