I have read about people dunking with milk, in order to provide more nutrients. I was wondering how this was done, specifically what kind of milk and if one is suppposed to sterilize the milk somehow? Is it the same process as a regular water dunk?
thanks

Same process as a regular water dunk. However, your brf verm cakes have plenty of nutrients, and imo its probably less risky to go with the plain ol water dunk.

yeah, that i think was one of hippie3's ideas, but i think he recomends doing the milk dunk for like half an hour, and then a 24 hour water dunk with a 1:100 ratio of bleach to water, along with 2 parts vinegar. vinegar being used to lower the ph a bit and make the bleach's biokiller properties more active. i think. search for it, its not hard to find a shitload of info on it, i was reading the threads last night, if you cant find milk dunk info, look for bleach and water dunk tek, and you may find info about the milk dunk along with it.

yeah i did a search, i have been reading about dunks for several days now, i just can't seem to find specifically whether or not one is supposed to sterilize the milk, and how one would go about it. i don't know if i am going to do it now, but i may experiment with it in the future. so, do you sterilize?
thanks guys

Im guessing you should sterilze the milk somehow, b/c for my first eq cake that I ever did, I dunked it in milk which a couple of days later began to smell like sour milk. Then wouldnt you know, some kind of green shit was growing on the bottom of the cake so I had to toss it.

well, thats just the thing, i dont know how you would go about sterilizing milk, it has already been pasterized, but that still leaves a lot of little microganisms and bacteria in it, but most of its good stuff, and i think if you tried to sterilize it, it wouldnt exactly be milk anymore, most people i heard boil water, sterlizing that, and then use powdered milk, and since you are doing this trying to provide some more nutrients to the cake, why not throw in one of those carnation instant breakfast packets as well. then you dunk it in the highly and i mean HIGHLY diluted bleach solution which should hopefuly kill off any nastys that may of been in the milk.

Milk doesnt need to be steralized because its already been pastuerized. The reason his started smelling and growing mold was more than likely because the cake wasn't washed off after being taken out of the milk. When milk is sitting in 75-80 degree temps, its going to get moldy and old. IF rinsed well, nothing should go wrong.

Your mycelium will not draw nutrients from the water its dunked in. All this is doing is increasing your chance for contams =/.

i didnt realize either haha. i read some other place on here that the cakes wont contam if its thoroughly rinsed out. they actually said its best to let sit in a 1/100 bleach water solution to just make sure, after rinsing, it still wont get contams

There is no need for bleach in the dunk water

Did you mean to say that there is 'no need' Shea?
