Mutilated patties

Is there any benefits (for mushroom hunters) in breaking up cow patties? I went on my first hunt of the year yesterday and noticed that alot of the cow dung was broken up into several pieces. My friend even pointed out a stick that seemed to be used to divide the dung. It also seemed that the mutilated patties had more pins than the others. One more thing, we were so disapointed that we didn't find any mushrooms that we wanted to scoop up one of the patties with pins and bring it home with us, what do you guys think?

No there is no benifit. It can be harmfull in fact. Many small animals like skunks go around ripping up pattys in search of bugs and grubs...the little bastards.

Hi Great_Cthulhu,
Turning a paddie over won't hurt anything since most of the shrooms grow up through the grass or around the edge of manure.
Here are some images of cowpies turned over with mushrooms growing underneath which eventually may have popped up along the outer edges of the cow pie forming a group outside of the pie.

In the bottom phot yuou can see how the mushrooms curled up and out fomunder the cowpie to find their Place in the Sun.

i would think that the mycel network being exposed to the sun like that would be bad, especially if the location doesn't recieve rain often. being on the bottom of the patty allows a moisture barrier between the above dung and the grass. personally i would just leave them be.

That reminds me, many were flipped over, thats probably how some broke apart. Well, somone is flipping them, so i hope it helps. Also the sun is completely blocked out by trees, I dont know if that makes a difference.

I too am perplexed since it is the cows theirselves whose hooves, flip them over sometimes and you might see many hooves whose cows have flipped them over in the fields. This is normal.
I use to think someone turned them over but let me tell you it was not a human who did it.
Whose hooves hoofed the padiies over. A great start for a tongue twister blister.

Those particiular shrooms came from spores which dfell on the grass and later the cow shit and some of the shit did not adher to the grass so that meanbt the mycelium grew on the underside of the grass and the shrooms were curling up from under it tothe outside sun.
tropism.
