From what I've read, the 50/50 mix has a low pH because of the peat used in it. Mushrooms prefer something less acidic to grow in, so that is why oyster shell or some other basic material is needed in the 50/50. I am a newbie to this tho and that is just what I understand from reading I have done. I'm sure others could answer your question much better.

I'm sure it's just my stupidity, but whenever I've used lime in my casing layer (and I've only done it twice,) I've failed.
It seemed to make the layer less permeable to gasses.

What about places to get coir offline? Is raw coco fiber unavailable through normal retail outlets?

LaCasta, that's a GREAT fuckin' question! Often wondered that myself.
I always thought "ko ko quar" though I've never heard it pronounced.
