Coir for casing?
    #6583160 - 02/18/07 09:08 PM (17 years, 1 day ago)

So today I was looking through the Mushroom Cultivation Archives and looking at the casing section. I came out of the archives and was looking through some of the recent posts and found HippieChick saying this:

Why? So the amount of CO2 would keep the myc from fruiting until fully colonized? Mono tubs seem to work great the way they are. No need to make changes in the plans.

Very , very closed minded . If that were really true , peeps would still be using coir as a casing layer and not a sub , lol .

I bought some coco coir a while ago and have it lying around...was strongly considering using it in a 60verm/40coir mixture with maybe egg shells (don't know if that's good but heard it might be b/c of the calcium carbonate) or lime added. I used to stalk these forums starting 3 years ago and at the time was hearing lots about coir. Is it considered inferior now or somehow flawwed? Does it have some sort of undesired nutritional value for the mycelium or contams to grow on? Here's Roadkill's 60/40 verm/coir tek for reference: http://www.shroomery.org/55/60-40-Vermiculite-and-Coco-Coir-Casing-Tek

That's the same thing I read 2 years ago and also tried as my first casing layer . Coir has just been found to have enough nutrients to work better as a sub . A  casing layer , by definition , has no nutritional value . You can add "some" coir to a casing mix to take advantage of it's moisture retention capabilities , but it's been found to be better suited as a substrate . I tried it as a casing mix , 60/40 and 70/30 and didn't like it as well as 50/50+ . I tried it as a sub and was happier with it's performance . That's not really saying much though , lol:grin: I thought it sucked as both , when compared to other obtainable resources

If you want to put your coir to it's best use , check some of the threads about using it as a sub .

Good Luck

if you want to use that coir effectively your best bet is as a sub, or as a casing additive(=/- 25% coir.)

i have been very pleased using coir as a sub. 6 quarts rye spawn + 1 brick coir cased with 50/50+ in a monotub can produce over 1/2lb dry(if i was not so tired right now I'd figure out the BE.) Also it has been very contam resistant and easy to work with for me.

Maybe I will spawn a couple pints to the coco coir. Might be fun.

I was considering using a 50/50 coir casing layer colonized from PF Tek brown rice flour jars.

What is considered the superior casing layer?

Miracle grow moisture control has been pretty popular lately. No need to make a mess mixing.
