Sand Barrier
    #6584338 - 02/19/07 06:00 AM (17 years, 1 month ago)

Just wondering on the effectiveness of dry vermiculite as a barrier against contamination. I know that it's a good idea and that it works, I was just thinking, could there be a better way?
Could sand be used? I've been thinking about this, and it makes sense. There's no nutrients in sand for contaminants to feed off, and also the fact that sand is terrible at holding water (if you get the right sand), it would stay dry and not moisten (as I've found is possible with the dry vermiculite due to the humidity within the jars). I also feel that the thickness of the sand will be truly excellent in blocking off contaminants.
Has anybody tried this? Is it a good idea, or a waste of time?

Thanks in advance

-Linja

I would think that the sand would fall down into your substrate. Not that it would be that much of a problem, but I don't think it would be worth it.

The verm barrier isn't all that great anyway. I don't think it really prevents enough contams to justify the wasted space and vermiculite. With decent technique it's a waste IMO.

Yeah, I kinda feel the same way too, as like I said, the humidity just moistens the layer anyway, and I still get contaminated cakes. I don't know, it sounds good in theory though.

well my feelings are that the vermiculite contains air and sand would block any sort of air exchange and contaminate easier.
