Hitachi Develops RFID Powder
    #6582143 - 02/18/07 06:32 PM (14 years, 3 months ago)

Conspiracy-minded types can thank Hitachi for something new to worry about -- RFID chips so small you'll never know they're there.

The electronics conglomerate recently showed a prototype of an RFID chip measuring a .05 millimeters square and 5 microns thick, about the size of a grain of sand. They expect to have 'em on the market in two or three years.

The chips are packed with 128 bits of static memory, enough to hold a 38-digit ID number.

The size make the new chips ideal for embedding in paper, where they could verify the legitimacy of currency or event tickets. Implantation under the skin would be trivial, allowing you to easily swap info with your walls or colon. Beyond that, let your fevered imagination wander.

We, for example, are reminded of the mysterious "Dust" that pervades Philip Pullmans "His Dark Materials" novels

I'd snort a line of that stuff. Nothing like pure information directly to the brain.

hmm, so first we need to set up "id's" for our customers so that we know who bought the "table sugar" then as the sugar slides past the "encoder" we cal label all of our "powder rfids" in the "sugar" as john doe's.

then as our john doe has his morning coffee our rfids will get stored next to his body fat. Then we can track john doe, not only where he goes but we will also be able to tell what he all puts into his body with the help of some other friendly devices.

Hitachi, Ltd. has developed the smallest such passive devices called µ-Chip measuring 0.15x0.15mm (not including the antenna), and thinner than a sheet of paper (7.5 micrometers). [4][5] Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) technology is used to achieve this level of integration. The Hitachi µ-Chip can wirelessly transmit a 128 bit (10^38) unique ID number which is hard coded into the chip as part of the manufacturing process. The unique ID in the chip cannot be altered, providing a high level of authenticity to the chip and ultimately to the items the chip may be permanently attached or embedded into. The Hitachi µ-Chip has a typical maximum read range of 30 cm (1 foot).

I don't think it would work too well for tracking.

There are some really cool uses for the technology as well... explosives tracking comes to mind. An electronic serial number that can not be destroyed by using the explosive. In the event of bombing, it would be quick and easy to know where the explosives came from.

you forget that

a. this is "new" range will increase in time.
b. they could concivably piggy back on each other and also jump signal through electrical wire and house antena ect.
c. who says they can't plant a "tiny" recieaver in your phone? every time your near it can upload very easy !

I assume these are passive RFID's, no power source..

It really wouldn't make sense for one of these to collect data and transmit it, would it?  And far better cell phone surveillance exists already

Yeah, they're passive.

I saw one guy who had some implanted in his hand, when he reaches for his door it automatically unlocks. No keys needed!

Yeah, applications like that are cool. If I could get my license, my credit card, and my car keys in my fingertip, I'd never have to remember to bring anything with me.

how do they make them?! thinner than a peice of paper?! thats ridiculous and scary!

how does electric current flow through it without flooding it too much? thinner than a sheet of paper means the wiring or whatever they use is really really REAALLY close together which means it would act more like a single wire than a machine if they used electricity.

is it more like a bar code? or is it magnetic?
Im scared.

that just provides an incentive to cut off his hand, instead of just stealing his key / etc.

It'd be easy to change the key required, and cutting off hands verses mugging is way different
