Straw bin - small patch of straw won't colonize
    #6580849 - 02/18/07 09:13 AM (17 years, 10 months ago)

Shroomgod's Tek was used. The straw wasn't cut and a weight wasn't put on it. It's been about 30 days but there are some patches of hay that just won't colonize. Can I just case it as it is?

I'm surprised it isn't green already. Hay isn't acceptable as a substrate. You need straw. It also needs to be cut and packed tightly. Straw, (not hay) holds an enormous amount of water inside itself and benefits very little if at all from a casing layer.

Ooops, I meant wheat straw not hay. It hasn't been packed or tightly packed which is why I'm guessing the top is having trouble colonizing(nothign to push it down against the substrate). Is this going to impact the fruiting considerably?

Yes. It should have had a plate or something else placed on top to weight it down during colonization. It's too late now, so i'd just introduce to fruiting conditions. Keep the air exchange high. The uncolonized straw is a recipe for disaster. It would be best at this point if the uncolonized straw on top is allowed to dry out. The fruits will push up from below.

Would it be best to just remove the straw or is that a contam risk?

Sorry if I'm asking too many questions heh.

thats what I would do. If your humidity is kept high the straw will not dry out that fast.
