Ok. I bought a styrofoam cooler with a styrofoam lid. I was going to use this as my incubator...is gfreat at retaining heat, and is dark. I bought a thermal water heater (Fish tank heater), and its kinda long, buit IO read a tek that says just cut a hole in the top of your incubator, stick a glass filled with water and a heater through it, and your good to go! AWESOME. SO I downed a Sobe, washed it out, and filled it with water (Its the only glass large enough to hold the heater). I stick it thorugh the roof of the cooler, and cover it as best I can with tin foil, to trap as much of the heat as I can in the bottle, with the plug coming out. Ok, here's the problem...its not heating worth a damn :-( What am I doing wrong here? I have the heater set to 90, but it STILL isnt heating the cooler very well. THe cooler is NOT that big, and I have 8 jars in there. What am i doing wrong? -Scott

All of your heat is excapeing from the top hole, you will lose to much heat through the tinfoil, you eather need to get a new cooler, and place the bottle inside of it, or you need to get something thats an better insulator to plug up that hole.

Hunter, I see. Ok....so if I place the sobe bottle with the heater INSIDE my cooler, and somehow cover the hole, it will be ok? THis is just a shot in the dark, but what If I covered the ole, with the plug coming out of it, with PLAYDO? DO you think that would sufficiently seal the heat inside? I know it sounds odd, but my nephew plays with that shit all the time, and it seems tobe an ideal sbstance to seal up a hole. ANy ideas or comments? -Scott

Personally I'd go to Home Depot or some ahrdware store and get caulk or some other kind of thing to plug it. Playdoo would probably be better than your tinfoil nut you should get something that will harden and totally be air tight.

If you have a submersible heater you could fill the bottom of the cooler partway with water and put the heater in there. Then leave your jars partway in the water, just enough to make sure they're not floating. That's how I have my incubator set up and it keeps the temps just right.

Ben, yeah, I was thinking about doing that....however, wouldn't that create too much moisture in the air? -Scott

A high Rh during your spawn run is Ok. Does not really make a difference from what I have experienced. Plus it helps your jars from drying out.

The humidity level doesn't really matter since the jars are pretty much airtight, plus (as StainBlue pointed out) the extra humidity would help to keep your jars from drying out too much.

Put the largest container of water in there that you can. It heats the water to 90, not the air. With such a small amount of water, that heater heats the water quickly and shuts off. More water will make it stay on more.

Thanks for all your suggestions. It makes sense now that I see the larger the body of water, the warmer the heat. I should have realised that.
What I wound up doing was taping a heat pad the the lid of the container I placed my jars in (Dont worry about fire, it doesnt get that hot unless i set it to be really hot), and hopefully, that will warm the air enough. I was pleased to notice Mycellium (Spelling?) growing in almost ALL the jars :-D
Next time I will try the jars in water approach. Thanks for your help. -Scott

Make sure that your heating pad doesn't create too much dry heat and dry your jars out. That happened to me the first batch of jars that I innoculated.

Hmm. Should I put a bottle of water in the Teran, just to make sure that theres enough humidity? -Scott

Maybe if you put a layer of perlite and water on the bottom. That might help to keep it moist. Other than that the only thing that I suggest is, to make sure that there is something in between the pad and incubator. Maybe some towels or something like that. Just something to keep the heat from transferring directly from the pad to the incubator.
