4 pounds of heroin seized

A routine traffic stop by a Colorado State Patrol trooper ended with two men being arrested and $100,000 worth of heroin being seized, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration announced today.

The stop was made on Interstate 70 near Grand Junction and the drugs were contained in three separate bundles weighing 4 pounds in the spare tire of a sports utility vehicle, according to Jeffrey D. Sweetin, DEA special agent-in-charge.

Troopers arrested Fernando Ornelas-Trevino and Jorge Gonzalez-Esqueda, ages unknown, both of Mexico.

"The heroin seized in his investigation was destined to be sold on the streets of Denver," Sweetin said.

State Patrol Chief Mark V. Trostel said, "Criminal interdiction on Colorado's roadways lowers crime rates in communities by interceding in criminal activity, apprehending fugitives, and interrupting the flow of illegal contraband."

Ornelas-Trevino and Gonzalez-Esqueda remain in custody pending the filing of federal and state drug charges.
