alright well mold on shrooms is definately bad. the punishment it gives you if ingested ranged from mild nausea to death. (so watch out for it)

Its very easily identifiable and even easier to identify when its growing on a mushroom cake or casing because its the stuff that isnt bleached white like mycelium.

colors to watch out for
-blue (although most of the time its bruising)
-green
-orange
-any color thats not white

There are a few molds that are white that you need to be careful of, but they are also easy to identify.

Cobweb mold is a white mold to watch out for, but next to mycelium it looks very thin and frail with its coloration usually being slightly more grey than mycelium.

Mold also smells really bad. Believe me, you'll know if you messed up.

Overall just keep everything as sterile as possible and you should have no problems keeping the stuff at bay.

Hope all goes well,
drew

but if you bought them and they are already dried out chances are they are perfectly safe to eat and mushrooms from the same batch have already been tested. (unless you bought the whole batch)

Cause when people sell them they test them first for potency and then set the price (or at least thats how its done around here)

But there should be no worry of mold or anything on dried mushrooms whatsoever.

Perhaps you can enlighten us on what mold contaminants of mushroom culture cause nausea or death when eaten, because in all my years of growing, I haven't encountered any. Blue mold is penicillium, which blue cheese salad dressing and most antibiotics are based on. Green molds are trichoderma and apsergillis, both common and floating all over yours and my house, not hurting anybody. Black molds can be sickening if spores are INHALED. Don't spread disinformation if you don't know the answeres please.

RR- im pretty sure eating any mold can make you sick..

i have some friends who sell wild mushroom for a living. they are reallly strict on their drying methods, as not fully dried mushrooms, down the line, can make many people sick. more from i believe bacterial stuff then mold issues, but either way if the mushroom isnt cracker dry, and you dont know how old it is, dont eat it.

You're comparing two things. Mushrooms improperly dried can have live bacteria, which causes food poisoning. The question I answered above concerned molds. If all molds were toxic, we'd get sick from eating any form of cheese or using salad dressing, and especially from those antibiotics we take when sick which are made from the metabolites secreted from molds.

Quite obviously, we wouldn't eat a moldy piece of bread(although it probably wouldn't hurt us), so don't eat an obviously moldy mushroom or anything else. There is just a ton of disinformation spread around the boards that eating a mushroom from a substrate with green mold on it is going to hurt you, which it will not.
