do it. you'll thank yourself later.
i have been a mental wreck the last week, been without meditating for a couple months now, picked it up again, incredible what meditation can do to you in such a small amount of time.
i am dedicating my life to this practice.

i've tried meditation a few times before. the first time i think it worked the best because the other times i was expecting to feel like i did the first time which i guess screwed it up.
But i closed my eyes, sat up straight and had some ambient music to help take my mind away. (im not ready for silence quite yet)
But i lost connection with where i was after 30 minutes or what felt like 30 minutes and i started to get a feeling like my body was disproportionate to everything else in the room, and like my size was changed. I was then interrupted by some noise and it came to an end =P.
Not sure if that was what the purpose of mediation is, but it was relaxing and refreshing when i came out of it.

There is no purpose to meditation, it simply is.

Meditation may be is, but there is a purpose for using it.

Meditation the way it is thought of starts with the intention to meditate, which has underlying motives, correct? This is different from the notion of meditation itself, such as spontaneous one-pointed concentration, maybe while playing hockey one naturally slips in with no intent of doing so, and meditation is.
But to initiate the ritual of meditation.....

It is said in the abhidharma, that mind already naturally posseses the mental factors of single-pointedness and beneficence. This means that left alone, the mind will naturally reside in a beneficent and single-pointed state. The mental factor of single-pointedness every moment is caught up with thoughts and objects of senses constantly, which is why at first we train to rest it on a single object to calm the mind. Similarly our mental factor of beneficence can be twisted to give rise to the feeling of joy in response to afflictive phenomenas, such as taking pleasure in causing another being pain as a rather extreme example.
When we meditate, it is important to check our intentions, and our motivations for practice, as well as making sure our object of meditation is conducive to liberation, i.e not an object that can give rise to afflictive mental phenomena. So, its not really true that any object can be used for meditation, or that everything is meditation. We have to be very clear about this point, otherwise it can be very difficult to begin correctly. This is why trying to practice non-gradual approaches to meditation can be a little more difficult, and also why it is usually advised that one begins with a more gradual method.

Fireworks, it seems you may have overlooked the usefulness of gradual meditation methods by presenting the fruit as the path. Even paths that take the fruit as path warn about overlooking the usefulness of formal practice.
Meditation is a tool, as with any tool, it depends on ones intentions for using it. The purpose of meditation can be just to relax at the end of a hard day, or for realization on a path to liberation from suffering, or indeed for whatever other strange purposes one may have. Part of wisdom is knowing which is a more useful intention to have.

there are 2 parts to buddhist meditation (really they are all the same) which is also called practice.
first is relaxation then is insight.
for what is meditation "practice"?
although yogic principles are involved (in the relaxation side), meditation provides an opportunity to practice awareness (insight), thereby gently and deftly to establish the middle way.
this is the practice that makes living better by creating mental plasticity clarity and resiliance.
