melbourne hunt - 1 species or 2?
    #656476 - 05/31/02 08:42 PM (16 years, 25 days ago)

went hunting this morning, found these growing amidst pine and eucalyptus mulch. In the below picture the three on the left have thick stumpy stems and monotonous brown caps, while the two on the right have thinner stems and more shaded or morphing coloured caps (sometimes with a nipple). Are these different varieties of the same species? Or separate species altogether? Both types have bruised blue.

And another question...
How small is too small? We picked plenty of very small ones, shown below. Worried about whether we should have waited for them to reach their full size, instead of picking tiny nubs

Just in case you were wondering, here's the motherload

Counted about 200

How's the best way to store them? We were hoping to dry/powder them, can anyone suggest how this is done?
Thank u

Happy shroomin'!

Were they in the same patch? They are probably the same species. They look like and active Psilocybe. BUt, I dont trust my judgement as I am once again a noob at identifing, so please wait until you get someone much more experienced

Hello... very nice find you got yourself there...I'm quite sure that they're Psilocybe Subaeruginosa...eat about 8 and you'll be feeling very nice, they're quite potent...i think the dosage of them is on one of the faq's on this site...
Concerning storage, the first time i found some of these critters i put them in honey for a week before eating them...they remained active but seemed to have lost a bit of their potency...also the honey lost its gloopiness...if you know what i mean...which made me sad for a reason i can't quite put my finger on...
i've recently dried a new batch of these mushrooms with a portable heater set on low for about an hour...make sure they don't get hot...then i put them in a "drying chamber" i made with the aid of wire mesh, a wash cloth and some calcium chloride...look up some drying procedures, it's well worth the time

You have two varieties of Subaeruginosa - the wavy capped variety and the umbonated variety. They both have the same spores microscopically - I will soon find out whether they are two distinct species in terms of Cystidia or not.
Enjoy those potent babies!

I found these babies the other day growing out of mulch, They turned blue on the stems when brused or scratched So i picked the whole lot and took em home and made a few spore prints and dried the rest abd put them in a sealed bag in a dark dry place, What would be the best way to consume them now
Thank's for any help
ill post a picture of the spore print when i figure out how to do it
