Orange?

SWIM's cakes have started to shrink a little bit in size and have been becoming a lovely orange tint. Are they thirsty? Are they contaminated? Am I a moron?

Hmm, an orange tint isn't good. Sometimes a cake will yellow from moisture stress, but the cake shrinking tosses that out the window. Just keep your eyes on the cakes for a few more days. If the orange tint darkens or for that matter doesn't go away, toss them away. The cakes should be nice and white with mushroom mycelium.
A picture would certainly help for a diagnosis.

Oatman that's scary...
Yeah, your jar should be WHITE. Maybe with a slightly yellow liquid after the jars sit a while.
My latest ones got some discoloration in a couple spots. I was scared it was trich, but turned out it was just bruised

6 months!!!
haha, today we found some black mold in the bottom of a trash can. AHHH!!! There was also some green in the kitchen. Whenever I see mold I feel like I'm hazmat and it's a radioactive substance. Scares me I had a trich outbreak (3 casings) and was worried about my current stuff.
Fortunately, all is well (so far).

you should... once trich is green, better not mix with any moving air currents.

:\ It turned green, very green, but I think it was too moist to travel (hopefully). It was horrible. Somehow it got in some LCs and rye jars as well. It *seems* to be gone though. I've colonized 40+ jars with no contams...well except one LC that I wasn't sure about (some of the "myc" floated to the top, previous experiences that's bad) and I did a trial run. The jars turned nasty green really quick.
I have some containers that the trich infected poo was in, a little scared about using them. Will probably just trash and not risk it.
trippindad - trash it Don't open the jars either.

It's not orange like that at all, it's just a slight orange tint and they are cakes that were birthed.

Metabolites can give a cake an orange tint. Look at the second picture in this post over at the right side. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/6562217#Post6562217 You'll see the metabolite pooling on top of the substrate. If that's what you're seeing, it's harmless. You'll need picture to get a good diagnosis. If they look like the lipstick mold above, toss out immediately. RR

Thank you RR. That's exactly what it looks like. I think I might have water dripping from the lid onto my cakes. Would an increase in FAE help with this?

Try tilting the whole thing so the water runs to one side of the lid and down the wall instead of on your babies.
