Karlfinn,
Thank you for your post warning of the dangers of wild mushrooms. I have a story told to me by the lady at the bank. In Romania, where she is from, the people are extremely poor and they hunt the wild mushrooms. For centuries they have eaten a certain mushroom and this knowledge has been handed down from generation to generation. Then one day the mushrooms became contaminated somehow. Dozens of people got sick or died from it. I read that one type of mushroom that grows on logs is okay to eat but if an animal shits on the log, all the chemicals change and it becomes toxic.
Karlfinn is right to bring this current news of deaths to our attention. He is also right that growing your own is the safe way unless you are very well informed.
I am a new member and am very enthusiastic about mushrooms. I am planning to start hunting mushrooms soon around Toronto. I was aware of the dangers because of my readings, but when you see that it has actually happened recently it kind of wakes you up. We do have Galerinas here as well. There are few books with any relevent information for our area. I have decided to do it right though. I am joining the Toronto Mycological Society. This is a group of people that go on forays into the surrounding area in the spring and fall. As well, they have meetings, training, a dinner, and a fair. They will teach me where and when to hunt the mushrooms and which ones are toxic. Last year on their weekend excursion, they collected 200 kinds of mushrooms in the Muskokas. Sure, I might have to eat a lot of mushrooms to find the psychoactive ones, but it's a price I'm willing to pay. They even advise on the outfits to wear and go out rain or shine.
I enjoy the Vendor Wars as it gets rid of my agression when I read the crap.
Fight you bitches, I hate peace.

sad but true....it does happen...all I wanted to get across is for those who do not know to learn from those who do ...just as you are planning ...smartly to educate yourself in the field... I should have not said only "buy from vendors"...the spore exchanges forums are full of people with very good knowledge and trade-goods....I did not mean to sound so slanted towards just the vendor accessibility to good trustworthy spores... so take care all and to all good night....farmer..

Hey karlfinn, Sucks to hear about what happened, I too know how unlikely it is to find shrooms in WV. Beautiful country and beautiful caves, but not many psychedelic fungi.
How was the gathering aside from that? I've never been, but I've heard of it, and have been aquainted with several who I believe are involved with it. Sounds like a blast, but I wasn't able to be in the area (as is all too often the case). So, tell me more about it? How many people showed up, how were the bands etc etc.

PM me with any cultivation questions.
I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.
