Google - Privacy - Scroogle - Privacy

The following is mean as PSA, although it might be old news to many, and non-applicable to some.
Google is keeping records of searches. They've always done this, but now they are offering those records as a front-end service.
Seeing a list of my searches right before my eyes angered me and led me to disable the Search History feature.
News was broken by the Consumerist blog, which linked up to this short piece annoucing Google Search earlier this week:
http://www.somebits.com/weblog/tech/bad/googleSearchHistory.html
Further, I decided to read up on Google in general, as well as gmail, and was completely repulsed by their eternal cookie and gmail turn personalized advertising engines.
It's all very Orwellian to me.
I only share this with you all because some of you might find it interesting. I now search using Scroogle, and am working my way towards avoiding Google products across the board.

Also, search engine with no advertisments: http://www.scroogle.org/cgi-bin/scraper.htm
Gotta thank the Shroomery for getting me thinking along these lines. Appreciate the tips to hook up with Hushmail. And I understand I should run Linux, but will have to learn more about that.
I appreciate all tips on better computing!!

Lots of ways to get around googles new line of bullshit.
I now use ixquick.co.uk for serching, and anything linked to google I make sure I am not logged in to a google account when I use it.
There are some serious concerns with their new privacy policy, most are baseless, but there does exist a serious concern that we will end up with no choice.
If it travels down the same path it is now then, we will end up with less choice about privacy and more scrutiny in regards to what we are searching for/buying/reading. It seems to be less and less clear where that information is going and how it is being used these days.

...On a side note there are a heap of programs for different situations that come in handy for those concerned, from blocking known problem ip addresses to setting up a good proxy or vpn.

A friend of mine uses startpage. Now that scroogle has bit the dust I've been using that but I ought to try out duck duck go and the others. Fuck google.
Actually that said my google sharing addon works again. It was incompatible for a while. Thing is, I don't always have my browser at hand so that's why I use a google alternative. It's just the principle of the matter.

A lot of people are panicking because they think their employers (future and present) will go buy this info from Google and see that they've been beating off to incest porns and visiting various drug sites trying to learn how to grow a few pounds of ganja.
People are taking paranoia to a whole new level. Google isn't doing this to sell off your web history. They're doing it to tailor their advertising strategy to individual users.

The reality is that they should be worried about Google handing the info over to any authorities that request it. They will do it in a heartbeat, without a warrant.

google privacy score
The problem is that Google is a black hole for information. I simply don't feel like supporting them. having ssl searches from duckduckgo are just a bonus.

"Oh, this tank with flamethrowers on it? We'll, we won't use it to break into your compound and set fire to everyone inside. It's just in case*."
*incase you live in Waco, then you're totally burned.
Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you. I for one approve of people looking for alternatives. When advertisers realise fewer and fewer people will put up with google's "dont be evil, no wait, let's be totally evil" policy they will stop propping it up and google will crumble and die a peasants death.
Maybe not a peasants death but I can dream.

I'm curious about this as well..
