Newspapers vs. news on the internet.
    #6539584 - 02/07/07 10:38 AM (14 years, 3 months ago)

I get most of my news from the internet but I find that whenever I sit down and leaf through physical publications, the tactile part of it, actually touching the paper and turning the pages, leads me to immensely more engaged with the material I'm reading.

Online, I get my news from a number of different sources, and I always try and read as much of the NYTimes as possible. The other day, flying back from vacation, I read the entire Saturday edition of the NYTimes front to back, the real actual paper version and it was entirely satisfying.

I'm going to make an effort from now on to buy a newspaper every other day and actually read it, make the time to read it. Now that I don't have internet at home I'd say there's an even better chance of it happening.

I buy and read the newspaper on an occasional basis. I get most of my news from the internet and tv, but you're right, I do get more engrossed in the paper.

I too get my news mainly from the internet.

I find that on national and international issues, the internet is better.

When i read through the actual local paper, i find myself just re-reading 'old' news.

Gotta have the local paper for the local news though

"Trying to determine what is going on in the world by reading newspapers is like trying to tell the time by watching the second hand of a clock."
~Ben Hecht (1893 - 1964)

"I do not take a single newspaper, nor read one a month, and I feel myself infinitely the happier for it."
~Thomas Jefferson (1743 - 1826)

"Editor: a person employed by a newspaper, whose business it is to separate the wheat from the chaff, and to see that the chaff is printed."
~Elbert Hubbard (1856 - 1915)

None of these guys had the internet though.  It's good to live in an age where we have multiple sources for news.

I've got a deep attachment to print media in general.

I dislike newspapers compared to internet news on account of how wasteful newspaper printing is.

Newspapers are not up to the minute, and produce a lot of trash/pollution.

I haven't read a newspaper in years.

Yeah Jefferson was a voracious reader, yet a steadfast newspaper hater.

I get all my news online. I've imported about 50 rss feeds into FeedDemon and read that every morning before going to school/work.

for sure. for news, though, i tend to just read various sites online, as i like the reader-feedback that a site like digg allows for, and things tend to be updated quicker. nothing beats a sunday edition ny times & a massive IPA shit, though

Living by fossilized quotes much???

I'm a journalist, and I can tell you one thing. It's people's attitudes and tastes that shape the news. When people decide not to buy a newspaper, how do they expect them to have the money to fund investigative reporting? And what about the fact that most Americans like shitty human interest stories? It wouldn't get printed if people didn't read it. The only way newspapers make the money they need to stay in existence is by appeasing a lot of stupid people who could care less about the facts and who can't seem to find the patience to sit down and read more than a paragraph at a time.

And as for internet news - some positives, some negatives, but one thing's for sure. The internet is a breeding ground for people to ignore differing opinions. People tend to get tunnel vision - only visiting sites with which they align politically with. So much for getting the facts...

I think everyone should support print journalism. It's survival is more crucial to our civil liberties than you think!

Without phone, internet or tv for five months...I HAD to buy a newspaper to find out what was going on at all. It was really cool because I started earnestly looking forward to my "daily paper" every evening.

I ignore news of all sorts as much as possible.

However, I've seen studies at some point or another that show reading something physical, that you can touch and turn the pages sticks with you more than reading something on a computer screen. So I suppose reading an actual newspaper would give me more satisfaction because I'd better retain whatever I read.

This no different than printed new or TV. The TV networks cannot air anything that would be a conflict of interest with their advertisers. So in a way, all news media is biased because everything comes down to money. Nobody will speak the truth if it conflicts with their pay checks.

my support goes to privately owned news web sites which give many independent journalists free access to the public forum.

the Guerrilla News Network is one of the better known independent news organizations out there.

major newspapers and mainstream television are all scripted to suit the power structure. a little research will go a long way in realizing this.
