Packing the substrate - tight or loose?
    #6539425 - 02/07/07 09:15 AM (14 years, 3 months ago)

After having some difficulties with the Magic Mushroom Grower’s Guide, I decided to switch to the PF Tek. In the PF Tek, it gives instructions on how to pack the substrate in tightly, but in the Magic Mushroom Grower’s Guide, it says it’s been discovered that having the substrate loose and airy is best. What are your experiences?

Very true. Packing a substrate down can cause the mycelium growth to stall and will significantly increase colonization time.

Except for bulk runs packing is very useful  (For PF tek of course, no)

You want manure to be loose and airy, packed by gravity alone. If you pack it tight, colonization is slowed. Some commercial farms pack the manure/compost after full colonization, but not before.
