Yes, and it is Gyromitra esculenta. Put the joint down and take a closer look at the keyboard when you type mj.

heh heh, yeah, MJ is such a stoner-typer

whatever hes got i must have too. I make the DUMBEST typos, sometimes typing the wrong word or the same word twice, always having to double check.

for example when I typed the above, i put "trying" instead of "typing"  even tho i clearly thought what i meant to type.  must be a left-right brain thing

I don't know if I would call this mushroom "very" toxic. If I remember correctly it contains a type of carcinogenic hyrdazine that has to build up over time before symptoms appear. I've run into old timers picking them in the woods and warned them only to hear "I've been picking these for years boy".

I must also co9nfess that the friggin spell check and the word spell check are the shits. See the number 9 in the confess word above.

There are hundreds of simple words not rec0ognized such as the large '0' which appeared in the word recognized.

Any nu8mber also will not show up as mis-spelled. I do use the spell check at times. Falling eyeglasses off my nose is also a problem looking down at the keyboard and then up at the screen.

No, it's not a carcinogen. It is a chemical toxin called gyromitrin (N-methyl-N-formylhydrazine) which is metabolized in the body to monomethylhydrazine, a component of rocket fuel. It destroys red blood cells, neurons, and liver tissue and can cause death within 12 to 24 hours. Boiling the mushroom or cooking it at high temperatures releases the gyromitrin, and leaves the mushroom edible (usually). Though there have been cases of the cook getting sick from breathing fumes as the mushroom cooked. There also seems to be differences in the chemical makeup between north american and european samples, though I believe some european samples do contain gyromitrin. There have also been poisonings in people who eat them for years, then get one that makes them sick and kills them. So even your 'old-timers' aren't completely safe. This mushroom should be regarded as potentially deadly, despite the fact that 'esculenta' means delicious!

that type of hemolytic, neuro, hepatic and renal damage, if survived, can be considered QUITE cancer-promoting.
also it would make you severely vunerable to several deadly illness's that normally only effect the very old or those withought immunie systems.

a glass of liquor would probably embalm your brain.

these chemicals may also be present in small quantities in morels, which is why it is critical to cook them properly

Thanks MJ. I'd hate to see what your spell checker would make of gyromitrin and hydrazine!

Mitch- good point about the presence of these chemicals in morels. I read that recently too but forgot where - maybe tom volk's website?

All this talk about morels - makes me start drooling!

Not to be too off-topic but the words with numbers in them do not show up as a misspelled word.

mj. I have no problem with the Latin words.

Mitch is, as usual, right on. But I *like* embalming my brain.

Morels are nasty poisonous if undercooked or raw.

xmush, Tom Volk has a bunch of stuff along these lines on his site. All of it is worth reading.

Happy mushrooming!
