i'm trying to build an incubator with either a light or a fish tank heater, but im worried about these things running in my room whilst im not at home.
How safe are these things if i run them in a closet? is there any alternative/safer method???

If you have a light already in you closet you can change watt. of bulb to effect temp very easily without much risk. icandesant bulbs can go to 200 watts as far as iv'e seen. The biggest wattage bulb I've use has been 150 in the winter it raised the temp in the closet a good 10 deg.

nah, there's no light in there. i was going to build an incubator with one in it, but i think that it's a risk being so close to a box etc.

I really don't think you should worry, unless you live in a really old house with the old aluminum wiring. I have made a fruiting chamber out of a small aquarium. It has a ten watt flourescent light in the lid. There is also a Kaz healthmist ultrasonic humidifier connected to it with flexible tubing. Both are plugged into appliance timers, which are in turn plugged into a multi outlet strip that has it's own circuit breaker. If any thing goes out of whack the circuit breaker will shut it all down. You can get these things everywhere from Wal Mart to Radio Shack.

yeh thanks, it should be right, i'll put it in a glass container rather than plastic so that nothing melts, and i'll clear enough room so that nothing's lying against it. I think i have a circuit breaker around here somewhere...

Im curious as to why you would have a light in an incubator. First off, I would not use a light for heat, especially if its built in. That sounds like a fire hazard. But really, why would you use a light since you want complete darkness for the jars to germinate?

Jars colonize fast enough at room temp. You dont need an incubator.

yeh, but it's winter down under and my room temp is at like 50 degrees. too cold for mushies?? i heat it in the evening, but the rest of the night and the day it's at about 15.
