I think I killed the spores
    #651422 - 05/29/02 03:05 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

My friend recently counstruced a water incubator and put innocultaed jars in them. He accidentally put the temperature up to high, because 12 hours later the thermometer in the incubator read 98.1. I was wondering if the spores are dead or if its possible to continue?

Thanks

I think thermal death is slightly above that temperaute (102 or 108 or something) so you should be fine...

Thanks

Do you think 90 is to high of a temperature durring the incubation period?

Yes, considering the substrate temperature is higher than that of the surrounding air. You should aim for the air termperature to be abour 82-84 degrees.

The subtrate temperature is higher than the surrounding air? If the air is whats heating the jars, how can the jars be hotter than the air? Does the mycelia produce it's own heat (endotherm?)
I fail to see how you can set the temperature of the incubator to, say, 85 degrees, and have the substrate be somehow hotter, can you please explain?

The same reasons apply as to why a compost pile creates heat and can spontaniously combust.

i keep my incubator at 82, that way it gives it alittle le-way for the jars, since they are a few degress higher in temp, to get it close to around 85.

The problem with the water heater is that it has no temp dial. Only heat settings. So I can only measure the temperature of the air in the same container as the jars.
