smaller amounts of straw
    #651392 - 05/29/02 12:52 PM (21 years, 6 months ago)

I want to experiment with some straw. I have found my local feed shops have bails of it but I *really* dont need that much let alone I have no place to store it. It is cheap for how much you get (96lbs for $10.95ish) but I don't need that much. Does anybody know where I can purchase smaller amounts of straw (not online) ?

Hardware stores have smaller bales of it for 3-6 bucks.

Its all wheat straw. Try to find some without all the flowers in it.

...are you sure that it is all wheat straw? One place told me that I wouldn't find wheat straw around here because it doesnt grow around here. I know it grows a lot in out neighbouring province (Alberta) so I doubted that. I just know to look for the light yellow stuff (w/o seeds .. or is that just hay? and now w/o flours). You think they carry it year-round?

You know what....there is like 3 feed shops in my area. I went to 2 of them and they just had big ass bails of it. I then went to the thrid one, (which was the closest), and found they just had garbage bags full of loose straw. I was so happy and it only costed me $3. Guess you just have to look around, or just do a lot of cultivation hehe

Yea? I have a few local shops and a few out of the area that I would be willing to travel to. Only one said they didn't have straw and one place even had straw in their name. None of them could tell me what kind it was and they all seemed to have big bails. Really, I dont think I could use 96lbs of it in my lifetime...

Actually I'm not sure its all wheat straw but Im pretty sure the brighter yellow stuff is. Any hardware store around here sells it in bales. TN,USA. Some even sell tiny 5 lb. bales. Year round.

You might want to try a pet store, some of them sell small bales of straw for rabbit bedding.
Good luck in your quest!
