Im starting to get worried about contamination(Pics)
    #6512949 - 01/30/07 04:01 PM (17 years, 27 days ago)

Im near the end of my first flush and some of the cakes are starting to turn funky colors on me.

Theres some purple stuff on a few of my cakes. Spores or contamination?

This is the stuff that im worried about, litttle spots of green on about 3 of my cakes. The shrooms on these cakes havent really been growing, but niether has the green. Should i toss them?

Little splotch of white on the cap of this shroom, safe to eat?

I also had a few general questions about contamination.

1) Is the rule that if a mushroom looks alright it probably is alright to eat?

2) Is it bad to eat a mushroom that has been growing on a contaminated cake?

3) Any way to stop the contamination if it has just started?

The purple is spore deposits.
Cant tell you much about the green, because i cant see it too well.

Okaaaay...

The purple, as said above, is spore deposits from your mushrooms.

The green specks are blurry, but I am going to bet it is mold beginning to sporulate, and soon i think the green spots will begin to grow as the spores of the mold develop showing the color of the contaminant. I would pick any fruits and aborts off of those infected cakes, and either throw the cakes away outside or put the in your garden ASAP- just get them away from your grow area.

With mushroom growing (NOT hunting wild mushrooms- the same rules do not apply), generally speaking, if the mushrooms look and smells fine, it is safe to eat.

Many sources will warn against eating mushrooms off of contaminated cakes, saying toxins may have concentrated in the fruits or whatever, but that is not true. It IS safe to eat mushrooms off of a contaminated cake. You just don't want to leave contaminated substrates around your grow area, because it could slim your chances of growing mushrooms in the future- due to higher risk of contaminant spores infecting your projects.

There is no way to prevent a contaminant from growing without also killing the mushroom mycelium. Very often people try to cut off infected areas, but this does not work because mold consists alos of a mycelium, and is difficult to distinguish from mushroom mycelium until the mold sporulates- turning areas green. So even if you cut off every last piece of green, you are likely to miss some of the mold.
