Great pics. My Trichocereus are just starting to come up. I have T. peruvianus, T. pachanoi, and T. bridgesii going right now and have T. terscheckii seeds on the way.

How does T. bridgesii compare to peruvian or san pedro for Mescaline content?
I have seen them for sale quite cheep in the UK. Anyone had any experience with this type of Trichocereus?

I have read recently that they need a change of temp. from night to day in order to stimulate germination. This could help explain my low germination ratio (9/100 seeds) as I started using a heated propagator. Perhaps it should have been on a timer!!!

Nice Work. How old are those? I am planning on starting to grow from seeds this week and I am kind of exited.

I have not tested the T. bridgesii yet. I know that mescaline is one of the primary alkaloids. I have a montrose variety T. bridgesii that is too small (8") for use but hope that it will gain some decent growth this season. The seeds started sprouting after a week and have been popping up ever since. The seed tray fluctuates about 5?f with the high usually occuring in the early evening and is sprayed lightly in the mornings. This helps simulate the condensation that normally forms in the morning in the wild. I have found that all of my cacti really like the misting.

I tried a smallish dose of bridgesii about a year ago...seemed about as strong as pachanoi, maybe slightly more potent. The monstrose varieties are said to be reliably more potent than the average pach, but maybe only because they're slower growing.

Nope, no timer!!!
Is your soil sterile, humid, the atmosfere humidity very high at germination?

Warm feet will do the trick a little better

The soil was cactus soil, which is sterile when packaged.
The heated propagator was probably added to late, as non-have germinated since. The propagator provides a humid environment when the heat is on during the day and tends to drop at night when the heat is off. They seem to be growing very quickly in their new environment. There was also little light available in is first location; they have now been moved to a brighter location. Humidity could have also been a factor as the humidity being lower in its old location.

Do you think having the heating on a timer will have a negative impact on growth? I think that it better simulates their natural environment.

I have found that sterile soil is not necessary for high germination rates. I have never treated my soil with anything and still have high rates of germination. Having good seed stock is the most important thing. Old seeds generally germinate a lot slower and not as well, sometimes not at all.

In reply to:

I have to say that keeping the temp stabele has never done me any bad. My experience is when they are so small they profit a lot a this stabel temp. After 2 years or so I remove the heatpad. Winter time is a cold periode.

About simulating the natural evironment You must not use cacti soil and humidty too. But the germinationrate is almost like nature. Do not expose seedlings to direkt sunlight too, no good!

Hoped to have helped you....

Peace,

Eric

I just meant if you wanna aprouch natural evironment you can understand that there is no such cacti soil on the mounthens were SP grows. So adding soil will make it less natural. The same Imeant for humidty.

Innature 1000seeds flow around only a few will land on a perfect place for them. Between some rocks were is some more humidity and shade. Than 1 out of 100 will maybe germinate like happened with you.

I realy mean to say that is a little strange to addept only one thing to benifit there surroundings. Better use your equipment well and have profit from it.

The best time to start with seeds is in the early spring.
Get cactus earth from your local flower shop or nursery, try to work a bit clean, although the whole thing is not very sensitive. Put the earth in clean, preferably plastic pots. Make the earth really soaking wet. leave the pots for one day to let the excess of water drip out.
Now you can put the seeds in. They should be put just under the surface, it is not really necessary that they are covered with earth. Cover the pot with a piece of transparent plastic, which can be fixed under the edge with elastic or tape. It seems strange to grow cacti in such an extremely humid atmosphere, but it is o.k.. Put the pots in a sunny place, like behind a window on the south, it is nice if there is a radiator under the window, or if you want to do it more professional, you can use something that keeps the earth temperature around 22C (something like an electric blanket) Keep the pots covered with the plastic, there is no need to give water for weeks. Within two weeks tiny green balls will appear, the baby peyote's. After 3/4 weeks from the start, you can start making very small holes in the plastic, after a few days make some more and later make them bigger. In this way get adapted to the dryer conditions in this hard, hard world.
Once there are so many holes, that the humidity is the same as in the surrounding you can take away the plastic (this will be about 8-10 weeks after starting). As long a the cacti are so small, they are quit vulnerable, be careful. Once the top layer of the earth gets dry, you can start watering, but never let them have "wet feet".

The same goes for SP seeds and peruvianus seeds...

Peace,

Eric

I planted my Peruvian Torch seeds about a week ago and they have already started to grow. They are pretty tiny, but I am amazed at how fast they have started to grow.
